2021 Legislative Session Resumes; 300 Bills Introduced in First Four Days

The Colorado General Assembly returned to the Capitol last Tuesday, after a month-long recess fueled by concern over post-holiday COVID surges. They wasted no time, introducing 100 bills in the first day, many of which had unprecedented opportunity for stakeholder input during the recess.

Here are some health care bills we're watching:
  • SB21-016 Protecting Preventive Health Care Coverage
  • SB21-011 Pharmacist Prescribe Dispense Opiate Antagonist
  • HB21-1107 Protections for Public Health Dept. Workers
  • HB21-1005 Health Care Services Reserve Corps Task Force
In his State of the State Address on Wednesday, Governor Polis thanked health care and frontline workers and used the address as an opportunity to highlight some of his priorities, including pandemic relief, taxes, health care, education, and transportation.

Update on the fight to protect confidentiality in the peer assistance program
The full Colorado Medical Board met on Thursday, 2/18, and marked up a new policy draft designed to clarify eligibility and reporting requirements for Colorado Medical Board applicants and licensees who voluntarily seek treatment through the Board’s designated peer health provider.
The CPHP Peer Assistance Contract has been extended through April 30, 2021 and still protects the confidentiality of current participants. Please, if you need help, do not hesitate to take advantage of the current program.
CMS thanks the many physicians who answered our call to speak out about the importance of confidentiality during CMB stakeholder meetings earlier this month. The hope is that this new policy, once finalized, will ensure the necessary confidentiality protections for physicians.  However, CMS continues to have questions that must be answered before this issue is resolved. The draft policy should be available soon and will then become the subject of more stakeholder meetings in the coming months. Watch for details. Pending outcomes and recommended further refinements from the stakeholder meetings, the Board is scheduled to meet again on May 20 and may finalize a new policy at that point.
