WHERE TO NEXT?

Good morning Traveler,

I hope your holidays have been equally fun and festive and energizing and relaxing! This will be a short newsletter today.

With a high school hockey player, we are destined to be home for the holidays for the foreseeable future. Which is actually quite nice, other than the fact that the weather in NH has not cooperated, with more ice than snow.

This is the time of year where I either dream of lots of snow (preferable the white, fluffy sparkly kind) or of warmth and sunshine in tropical destinations. Expect near term Highlights to be in those places. This week's Highlight brings us to a location where the snow this year has been some of the best on record - Snowmass and Aspen, CO. Above is a picture of our daughter, who is living in Aspen and had hiked up to ski the Aspen Highlands bowl. Bluebird skies and powdery snow. No complaints. It's no wonder why she decided to head back to Aspen early.

For those of you that enjoy travel related TV shows, I received an email this week announcing a new series - José Adrés and Family in Spain. The series was launched yesterday on Discovery+. I haven't seen it yet, but it looks full of fun adventures and lots of great food around Spain. Enjoy!

Happy new year!

Warmly,

This week on Adventures in Luxury Travel I was joined by James Currie. James and I had a fun time talking about one of our shared favorite places, Ol Donyo Lodge, situated in between Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks on the border of Chyulu Hills National Park in Kenya.

Ol Donyo is a special place. The food, the hide, the views, the rooms, the active adventures and most importantly the people and the wildlife.

A few more reasons Ol Donyo is an ideal destination:

  • Unlike most safari lodges, Ol Donyo gives you the opportunity to go on safari by horse, mountain biking, walking or running.
  • Their sundowners are some of the best in Africa.
  • Their guides are a wealth of knowledge and excited to share what they know with you.
  • Their safari vehicles come equipped with professional cameras and your guide is knowledgeable about teaching you how to use it. Our guide was an incredible resource for our 18 year old daughter who caught the photography bug while at Ol Donyo.
  • The lodge is Relais and Chateaux and it shows in their culinary program. The food is creative and delicious and they set up your dinner to eat in a different spot every night. Also bush breakfasts after a horseback ride are incredible.
  • After a day of adventuring treat yourself to a massage or do some yoga on your patio gazing out at the animals.

This winter they will be going through a refurbishment and adding on a second 2-bedroom family suite.

If you are as lucky as we were, you will be woken by a lion in the middle of the night – making a low roaring sound. Absolutely magical.

You can find the episode on Apple podcasts here and the video here.

*Your gift when booked through Truvay Travel :

A special, exclusive breakfast, lunch or dinner in the hide, overlooking the animals at the watering hole.

LYNN BRITT CABIN

This week we are highlighting a warm, cozy spot surrounded by the cold.

A snowcat dinner at Lynn Britt Cabin.

Imagine the thrill of arriving to your exclusive cabin via snowcat

for an intimate dinner with your favorite friends and family.

You will be treated to an evening immersed in the feeling of Danish hygge (hu-gah)

while dining on incredible food in a rustic, authentic cabin.

Also know that the cabin is open for lunch and après.

Après is a scene.

Expect an on-mountain party with champagne,

shot skis and outdoor fire pit and lounge.

While you can choose to stay at Snowmass, we suggest instead staying at nearby Aspen, where the accommodation options are more plentiful and luxurious.

With a daughter living in Aspen, we recently booked our flights to see her.

Daily she's been sending us pictures of hiking up the Aspen Highlands bowl, skiing the most challenging terrain and skiing 49 mph on her way down the mountain

(yes that last one makes me nervous).

Her new home gave us the perfect Christmas present idea - my favorite - an experience.

She will be spending a day with an experienced Aspen guide

who will take her to all of the best on and off piste places.

Experiences are my favorite types of gifts.

If your partner or kids have a favorite activity, consider how you might

wrap it up in a bow for their next gift.

This year Aspen has seen some of the best early skiing conditions in a long time.

And for next season, Aspen has announced the opening of

new terrain on Ajax (Aspen Mountain).

When fully open Pandora, formerly considered back country skiing, will add 153 acres of skiable terrain, diversify the terrain with intermediate glades and groomed runs

and be served by a new high-speed lift.

It's a great time to be skiing (or planning a trip for next year) at the Aspen mountains.

At this time of year what are you dreaming of?
Lots of snow (preferable the white, fluffy sparkly kind)
Warmth and sunshine in tropical destinations
