Pollinators are everywhere! North Carolina is home to nearly 500 species of native bees (including mining, sweat, leafcutter, carpenter, and bumble bees), about 70% of which nest in the ground rather than in colonies. There are also over 175 native butterfly species (such as the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and Monarch) and more than 2,200 moth species inhabit the state. Other pollinators include beetles, syrphid flies, wasps, and birds like the ruby-throated hummingbird.
Come out this Thursday evening, Oct 15, at 5:00 PM to learn valuable pollinator information from the Yadkin County Beekeepers and the Yadkin Cooperative Extension Horticulture agent on how this is the crucial time of year to prep your yard to help pollinators!
- leave plant stems and leaves for pollinators to use for hibernation through the winter.
- learn the difference among bees, hornets, wasps, etc. (important since 70% of native NC bee species nest in logs, leaves, and the ground).
- easily attract mason bees with your fall yardwork so they can help pollinate your flowers and garden next spring!
- learn what kinds of plants help pollinators have something to eat from early spring all the way to late fall.
