Pollution Prevention Devices to Protect the Bay

Notice Date: Thursday, June 27, 2024

Project Overview & Benefits

The City of Miami Beach is installing four above-ground temporary pollution prevention vortex devices known as Downstream Defenders throughout the city, which will be installed adjacent to temporary stormwater pumps.

These devices are designed to filter out a variety of pollutants, including garbage, sediment, floatables, oil, and grease, that enter the stormwater system from the street during rain or high tide events. As stormwater is pumped into the Downstream Defenders, contaminants are captured and prevented from entering our waterways and, ultimately, Biscayne Bay. Temporary stormwater pumps are installed annually in low-lying areas to mitigate flooding caused by hurricane and king tide seasons.

These structures are approximately 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide. The scale of this device will allow for a higher pump flow capacity and the filtering of contaminants from stormwater runoff. The City of Miami Beach's Class V permit requires pollution prevention devices, which have been authorized by Miami-Dade County.

The permanent installation of this device will be completed as part of a future project. These devices are typically placed underground and can be found throughout the city in all of our new generation stormwater pump stations.

What's Happening

The City will install temporary Downstream Defenders and pumps close to these cross streets in the following locations:

  • Rue Notre Dame and Marseille
  • Lakeview Drive and Cherokee Avenue
  • North Bay Road and 56 Street

These devices will be installed near the temporary pumps that have been deployed, away from traffic areas.

Timeline

Installation of the aforementioned devices will begin in approximately two weeks.

What to Expect?

  • Less flooding in the areas noted above.
  • There will be no impact on traffic or streets at these locations.
