Pondering the Power of Words …
“The pen is mightier than the sword” by Edward Bulwer-Lytton came to my attention while pondering the power of words. In Scripture, the first chapters of Genesis and John reveal that ALL that has life and breath was spoken into being by the power of the Word. Such power is incomprehensible!
In my profession, words are important. I often spend more time writing and rewriting the inside message than is spent on the watercolor image. Words truly matter! A card with a great image but the wrong message inside determines its reach and usefulness.
While navigating the surge of negative words on television, social media and beyond, it is challenging to stay positive and hopeful.
I often speak before I think. I catch myself reacting rather than pausing to respond respectfully. I seek to be understood rather than to understand. Perhaps listening more and speaking less will help … less is more!
It is a choice I must make every day …
- Are my words destructive or life giving?
- Are my words careless or thoughtful?
- Are my words cutting or kind?
- Are my words sarcastic or gentle?
- Are my words negative or inspiring?
- Are my words divisive or do they promote unity?
- Are my words filled with despair or do they instill hope?
God’s Word is a compass to lead and guide us. The Word promotes unity, justice, joy, peace, hope, grace, mercy, compassion and love for all. In the days ahead, it is my prayer to listen well and use words of encouragement.
With warm regards,
