From the Desk of Larry Skolnick
CEO/President of the MJCC
Dear MJCC Members:

In my email that you received yesterday I told you that we were waiting on official communication from the City of Memphis in terms of our pools reopening. We have now received official word that pools may open under specific Health Department guidance and protocol. As such, I am pleased to let you know that the Indoor Pool will open this Sunday, May 24 th for members only.  The following protocol will be in effect in addition to the general safety protocol that the MJCC has already established:

  • Swim sessions will be limited to 45 minutes in duration as per Shelby County Health Department Directive 4, and the pool will close in between sessions for cleaning and sanitization per Health Department and CDC guidelines.
  • We will only be allowed to offer lap swimming using every other lane which will reduce overall capacity.
  • There will not be any indoor recreational swim as the pool will be available for lap swim/pool walking only.
  • No water aerobics/fitness classes will be offered at this time. We will continue to evaluate this as the phased in reopening progresses.
  • Advanced reservations for swim times in the indoor pool will be required and those reservations can be made starting this Friday, May 22nd at 8:00 am via our online reservation system www.jccmemphis.org/reservations or by calling the MJCC.
  • The MJCC cannot provide any equipment for swimmers and thus you will need to bring all swim equipment with you.
  • We are not permitted to offer any swim lessons or classes at this time.
  • Face masks will be required to enter the MJCC and can only be removed immediately prior to entering the pool and must be placed back on immediately after you exit the pool.
  • Children under 13 years of age will not be allowed in the indoor pool area without being accompanied by a parent/legal guardian.

In addition, the Outdoor Pool/Water Park will open the following Sunday, May 31 st   for members only and no guest passes may be purchased . The following procedures will be in effect:

  • We will only be allowed to have 25% of our functional capacity in the outdoor pool at any given time. Thus, MJCC aquatics staff may limit your use of certain areas if that area of the outdoor pool complex has reached capacity.
  • Recreational swim time will be limited to 45 minutes sessions as per Shelby County Health Department Directive 4, and the pool will close in between sessions for cleaning and sanitization per Health Department and CDC guidelines.
  • Social distancing of 6 feet will be in effect at the outdoor pool and only members of the same family may be in closer proximity than the 6 foot distance required.
  • Advanced reservations for swim times and lap swim at the outdoor pool will be required and those reservations can be made starting next Friday, May 29th at 8:00 am via our online reservation system www.jccmemphis.org/reservations. Telephone reservations may be made by calling the MJCC beginning Sunday, May 31st as the MJCC will be closed on Friday, May 29th and Saturday, May 30th in observance of the Shavuot holidays.
  • The MJCC cannot provide any equipment for swimmers and thus you will need to bring all swim equipment with you.
  • Face masks will be required to enter the pool house and can only be removed immediately prior to entering the pool and must be placed back on immediately after you exit the pool.
  • Entry into the outdoor pool complex will only be allowed via the pool house and members will not be allowed to enter the outdoor pool area via the indoor pool.
  • We have reduced the number of chairs available at the outdoor pool and chairs must remain where they have been placed and cannot be moved.
  •  Children under 13 years of age will not be allowed at the outdoor pool/waterpark without being accompanied by a parent/legal guardian.

Please note that all of our locker rooms remain closed so you will not be able to change into or out of your swim attire here at the MJCC. Please arrive at the JCC in your swim attire with your sunscreen already applied so that you can maximize your swim session. The pool house bathrooms will be available but showers and changing areas will not be available for use. The schedule for both the indoor and outdoor pools will fluctuate throughout the summer and will be updated on the online reservation system by 8:00 am each Friday morning for the following week.

If you have any questions about the contents of this email please contact Mike McGee our Member Services Director at [email protected] .

Thank you for your patience and in advance for your cooperation with the protocol and procedures for the MJCC pools!
