POPE JOHN PAUL II REGIONAL CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Advent Season
Students embraced the Advent season with prayer, reconciliation and service. Each day, symbols were added to the Jesse tree and figurines to the Nativity while the Christmas story was shared over the speaker for all to hear. The Kings traveled from grade to grade and will arrive at the manger to meet the baby Jesus on the day of the Epiphany, January 6th. Over 1000 canned goods were collected during the school's canned food drive which is sponsored annually by the Student Council. Donations were distributed to the Salvation Army of Glenmoore and City Gate in Coatesville. PJP students and St. Peter PREP teamed up to raise $1213.28 for the The Missionary Childhood Association which helps less privileged children throughout the world.
The annual Adopt-A-Family drive raised $1471.55 and will assist families from the PJP community. Our soldiers overseas were also remembered and thanked with hand-made Christmas cards and stockings stuffed with goodies and essentials.
Students collected funds and food for worthwhile charities.
Troop 4476 helped stuff 7,000 stockings for StockingsForSoldiers.org.
Students in PK-3 to 8th grade created a beautiful Advent Mural. The wreath was formed with hand written "acts of kindness" while the candles were made of recycled cardboard and yarn. Thanks to Mrs. Fader for her coordination on this project.
3rd and 8th grade buddies made Christmas cards for soldiers overseas.
Christmas Traditions
The second grade Grinchmas party with Mrs. Powell was fun! Books were collected and donated to REAL(Reading Excites All Learners), a one-on-one tutoring program in Chester County, Pa created to support at-risk readers in early grades.
Everyone enjoyed Secret Santa Shop sponsored by H&S!
Students found a little treat in their shoes in honor of St. Nicholas!
Third graders had a magical time at the Polar Express party in the Library.
PreK and Kinder students had a jolly time at Breakfast with Santa!
In early December, the Advanced Band and Middle School Choir spread some Christmas cheer to local Senior Citizens. Families and classmates also enjoyed special performances by the Band and Choir.
Christmas Pageant
Third, fourth and fifth graders presented a Christmas musical, Special Delivery, for classmates and family members at St. Peter church. Congratulations on a wonderful performance and special thanks to Mrs. Tyler for her guidance and support.
STREAM Activities
Students in grades 5 through 8 have been busy working on their projects for the upcoming STREAM Expo.
Ann Kaiser, founder of Project Engin, recently visited to see how their projects were coming along. She spent time talking to the students about the solutions they are designing and was impressed by the innovations she observed. The public is invited to visit the Expo during the Open House on January 27th from 12-2pm.
Students in Kindergarten through 4th grade have been enjoying their STREAM labs. After experimenting with sand, soil and clay, second graders created their own formulas for mortar using those substances and built walls.This tied in with the story they read about The Great Wall of China. Then they tested the failure points of the walls by seeing how many times they could hit them with a wrecking ball!
Students participated in the Hour of Code which took place world-wide during the first week of December. The event which was launched in 2013 is designed to spark students' interest in the field of computer science through the completion of short programming tutorials.
Alumni Visit
Former CACES Alumnus, Bill Svokos, visited 8th grade science classes and gave the students a presentation in engineering and the engineer design process. As an engineer, he gave the students useful information that they are using in the design of their prototypes for the STREAM Expo.
