Population Healthy podcast

You may have heard the term “gender affirming care” in the news or on social media. Often this term is used to refer to surgical procedures to help an individual’s body match their gender identity. However, gender affirming care is actually more than that. It involves a combination of medical, psychological, social, and legal factors.

On this episode of the Population Healthy podcast, we’ll talk with healthcare and public health experts, as well as members of the transgender community, to explore what gender affirming care actually is and how it can impact health outcomes for transgender and non-binary individuals.

Lingering symptoms common after COVID-19 hospitalization

About half of adults treated at hospitals for COVID-19 have experienced lingering symptoms, financial difficulties, or physical limitations months after being discharged, according to a National Institutes of Health-supported study published in JAMA Network Open.

“My clinic patients often want to know how soon they’ll get back to their usual health,” said Andrew J. Admon, the study’s first author, an assistant professor in the departments of Internal Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Michigan and pulmonologist at LTC Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center in Ann Arbor. “Based on these data, it seems that many people hospitalized for COVID-19 should expect symptoms to last for up to six months or even longer.”
