Port Canaveral and Orlando International Airport serve as tourism and cargo powerhouses that frame Central Florida's transportation sector, a recurring theme echoed during this year's Orlando Business Journal Business of Transportation summit. Several hundred business and government officials heard from the expert panel, which focused on the progress and plans of Central Florida's rail, roads, air and maritime systems; as well as how transit-oriented development is spurring valuable economic impacts and quality-of-life improvements for the region.

In addition to the executive leaders of Port Canaveral and Orlando International Airport, the panel included the leadership of Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority, the Florida Department of Transportation, All Aboard Florida, and transportation consulting firm VHB. Congressman Daniel Webster of Orlando addressed the need, sources, and securing of government funding to develop efficient transportation systems.

New and Improved Website Debuts
The new and improved Port Canaveral website at www.portcanaveral.com launched on Feb. 17, providing users and smart devices with more streamlined content and easier navigation.

"Our goal across all business lines is to provide the best experience possible, and this upgrade to our website helps us achieve that goal because our website often is the first contact the public has with us," said Port Canaveral CEO John E. Walsh. "The changes we have made to our website better serve our customers, visitors, and the community. It now better adapts to the way our culture communicates in this age of smart technology."

The Canaveral Port Authority partnered with Bayshore Solutions of Tampa, Florida to redevelop the website, which now features easily identified icons representing each business line to allow users faster access to information they seek.

The new user-friendly website also offers online payment for cruise ship parking, webcasting of Port Authority meetings, and the latest port news and publications. In addition, the employment and procurement hubs have been revamped for easier use.

Upgraded Bulk Conveyor System
Gets First Use

Martin Marietta utilized the new and improved bulk conveyor system at Port Canaveral for the first time when the Bahamas Spirit discharged limestone at South Cargo Pier 4. The $1.5 million new conveyor system is capable of offloading 2,000 tons per hour. The Canaveral Port Authority invested in the system with Martin Marietta to enhance terminal operational efficiencies and increase productivity.

Martin Marietta imports various aggregates and sells and distributes them from their Port Canaveral facility into the Central Florida region.
