Heavy Lifters Hit the Port of Brownsville

Two new mobile harbor cranes arrived Thursday, January 16, at the Port of Brownsville.
The cranes arrived at the port onboard the 393-foot long specialized cargo carrier  M/V BBC ASIA .
 
The Brownsville Navigation District ordered the Konecranes Gottwald Model 6 mobile harbor cranes in June 2019 to increase the port’s on-dock lifting capacity due to higher demands of cargo volumes.

"These cranes are one of the latest investments by the Port of Brownsville to meet the needs of our port tenants and growing list of clients," said Brownsville Navigation District Chairman John Reed. "The BND is committed to maintain and expand the infrastructure capabilities of the Port of Brownsville to keep the Rio Grande Valley competitive in the global market."

TWC Invests in Local Trade Workforce
The Port of Brownsville hosted the Texas Workforce Commission and local elected officials on Jan. 31, as TWC awarded $125,850 to the Cameron County Education Initiative, to provide skilled workforce training for 60 workers.

The Port of Brownsville supports more than 230 companies that rely on skilled workers for shipbuilding, international trade, shipbreaking, stevedoring, welding and other maritime-related operations.
 The Port of Brownsville transships more steel into Mexico than any other U.S. port.
United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement to Benefit Port Trade

John Reed, chairman of the Brownsville Navigation District, noted that the United States and Mexico have a long history as trade partners, with the Port of Brownsville serving a "critically important trade link between both countries."

More than $3 billion worth of goods move over the port’s docks to Mexico each year, he said.

Juan Hernandez-Ramirez was sworn in as a Police Officer by Port of Brownsville Police Chief Carlos Garcia.
New Officer Takes Oath
Officer Juan Hernandez-Ramirez was sworn in by Port of Brownsville Police Chief Carlos Garcia before the Brownsville Navigation District Commission at a regular meeting held on Jan. 22. Hernandez graduated from the Texas Southmost College Criminal Justice Institute Police Academy in December.

In this new role, Officer Hernandez will provide security for the port and the surrounding community to ensure the compliance of penal and traffic laws.
Port Earns 2019 MarCom Awards
The Port of Brownsville directory and website were each recognized with the 2019 Gold MarCom Awards in the categories of government publications and government digital media respectively.

The MarCom Awards is a competition hosted by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals that recognizes outstanding achievement by creative professionals in the production and design of marketing and communications media.

The 2019 Gold Awards are the third and fourth MarCom awards won by the port since 2017. Previously the Port Directory and port advertising were recognized by MarCom.

Port of Brownsville Annual Dock Dash
Annova LNG and Enbridge Sign Pipeline Agreement
Annova LNG signed a Precedent Agreement with Valley Crossing Pipeline, LLC (VCP), in January to provide transportation for Annova LNG’s total natural gas requirements at its proposed 6.5 MTPA liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility at the Port of Brownsville.

Under the Precedent Agreement, the existing Valley Crossing Pipeline from Agua Dulce to Brownsville will be expanded along with the construction of an approximately nine-mile lateral connecting VCP to Annova LNG’s facility. 
Norma Torres Celebrates 30 Years with BRG

If railroading wasn’t in Norma Torres’ blood before she went to work for the Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railway 30 years ago, you can bet it is now.

Torres, BRG president and chief operating officer, became the first female president of a shortline railroad in Texas history in 2001. As of 2016, the state had 45 such entities, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. BRG connects the port’s tenants to Class 1 long-haul railroads BNSF, Union Pacific and Kansas City Southern.
