In the 2021 annual report by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Port of Brownsville ranks 55th out of 150 maritime ports nationwide for the movement of waterborne cargo.

A Central Hub of Commerce and Sustainable Growth 

The Port of Brownsville has been a driving force for the Rio Grande Valley’s economy with impacts reaching far across the Lone Star State. In the last decade, the port has made significant strides, bolstering its position as a crucial center for commerce and a catalyst for regional growth. With major infrastructure improvements, increased capabilities, and a strong commitment to sustainability, the Port of Brownsville is leading the way in the maritime industry and a symbol of progress.  


Thanks to the port’s keen logistical network, the movement of waterborne cargo at the port has continued to rise. According to the. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ the port rocketed to 55th position out of 150 maritime ports nationwide for the movement of waterborne cargo in 2021, ahead of its 66th place in 2020.



The upward trend continues as more than 15.2 million tons of diverse cargo moved through the port in 2022, supporting various industries with efficient and reliable logistical services. This represents a 10.2 percent increase from the 13.8 million tons of cargo recorded in 2021, a new record for the Port of Brownsville. These growing numbers are reflected in the operating revenues as well. Notably, operating revenues for 2022 reached more than $38 million, surpassing the $30 million mark for the third consecutive year.

Campirano Receives Golden Eagle Award

The Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (RGVHCC) named Port Director & CEO Eduardo A. Campirano the recipient of its Golden Eagle Award at its Phantom of the Gala event held Oct. 20.


The award recognizes business leaders in the region. Campirano has served as Port Director & CEO since 2007, overseeing the operations of the only deep-water seaport located on the US/Mexico border.


The RGVHCC's mission is to strengthen local businesses and professionals through networking, mentorship, education, and promoting economic development across the border region.

Port Abilities: Unmatched Logistics

The Port of Brownsville's link in the supply chain is strong as steel.


In the latest segment of Port Abilities, watch the port's unmatched logistics in action. Recently, the MV Atlantic Prestige delivered more than 17,000 metric tons of steel coils destined for manufacturing centers in Northern Mexico.



This seamless operation was handled by Schaefer Stevedoring at Dock 11.

Harlingen South Students Discover Career Opportunities

In October, welding and construction students from Harlingen High School South's GEAR UP program explored the Port of Brownsville, uncovering its vital role in logistics and manufacturing throughout the Rio Grande Valley.


Additionally, Seatrium AmFELS and Bechtel Corporation provided insightful presentations highlighting current and future job opportunities at the Port that works.

Fun and Fitness Along

the Ship Channel

Nearly 500 participants from South Texas and Northern Mexico gathered to take part in the annual Port of Brownsville 5K1M Dock Dash held Oct. 14.


The free community event provides a healthy activity for families, local schools, and avid runners centered around the Brownsville Ship Channel. Each participant was awarded commemorative medal as they crossed the finish line.



This year's event was made possible by the generous support of sponsors including Rio Grande LNG, Lone Star National Bank, the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority, and Brownsville Rio Grande International Railway/OmniTRAX.

All Star Metals Receives Naval Vessels

All Star Metals, one of the main ship recycling companies at the Port of Brownsville recently welcomed two U.S. Navy retired warships for recycling.


The Charleston Class Amphibious Cargo Ships, the USS Mobile and USS El Paso, arrived to All Star Metal's shipyard on Oct. 12.


The Port of Brownsville is home to the most trusted ship recyclers in the nation, capturing over 85 percent of the U.S. Navy and MARAD ship recycling business.

USS JFK Soon to Begin Voyage to the Port

The USS John F. Kennedy will arrive at the Port of Brownsville around Dec. 15, for recycling.



International Shipbreaking Ltd./EMR Brownsville two years ago won the Navy contract to scrap the JFK, the last conventionally powered supercarrier in the Navy fleet, commissioned in 1968 and decommissioned in 2007. ISL was also awarded the contract to dismantle the former USS Kitty Hawk, which arrived at the port in 2022, to great fanfare and is in the process of being scrapped — roughly a two-year process. The JFK is a variant of the Kitty Hawk-class carriers.
