Starting with a single sandwich shop on Rock Boulevard in Sparks, the Port of Subs franchise has grown into a well-regarded chain with over 145 locations in seven states.

The story began over 50 years ago, when two brothers from New Jersey opened a submarine shop called the "Sub Shop" in Sparks, Nevada.
The brothers who started this business could make a very good sandwich, but they got a little upside down with the Internal Revenue Service. They forgot to file tax returns for ’72, ’73 and ’74.

John Larsen, a young local accountant, purchased the business in 1975 after preparing three years' worth of tax returns for the owners and realizing the business had potential.
After taking the helm, he sponsored a community-wide contest to choose a name for the Sub Shop. In a review of more than 10,000 contest entries, the name “Port of Subs” was born.

Larsen developed ten company-owned units between 1975 and 1985, and began offering franchise opportunities in 1985 due to high demand.
Under John Larsen's leadership, Port of Subs grew rapidly. He never took more than one day off a week or a vacation for seven years, and by the end of that period, he had paid off ten stores.

The brand is now known for its quality sandwich making and superior customer service.
Recently, Port of Subs was acquired by Area 15 Ventures, a Colorado-based private equity business led by former ReMax Realty founder Dave Liniger and former ReMax Chief Operating Officer Adam Contos.

This acquisition provides a tremendous opportunity for both companies, as Port of Subs has a great concept and is profitable with franchises and people who embody the right attitude.

ReMax Realty is franchised in over 100 countries. The future could see explosive growth for Port of Subs on both a national and global scale.
