July 1 Hirt Alpert Concert Canceled
The performance by Hirt Alpert that would have kicked off Concerts at the Park tonight on July 1 has been canceled due to COVID-19. We wish the band members a speedy recovery! The Concerts in the Park series will now begin on Friday, July 8 with DB Orchestra.

Grab a lawn chair or blanket, pack a dinner, bring your family and friends to Pauquette Park to hear live music at the new Beasley Pavilion, courtesy of the Portage Area Chamber of Commerce and Portage Parks & Recreation Department. All concerts are free to attend; donations are welcome. All shows start at 6:30pm.

DB Orchestra is a local band in Madison with nearly 20 musicians. Bringing the nuanced harmonies of a Doo-Wop group, the intensity of a marching band, and the flair of great jazz ensembles of yesteryear, they set the stage for an infectiously fun and uniquely electric live performance. You will get to hear all your favorite showtunes from various Broadway Shows such as The Music Man, Annie Get Your Gun, West Side Story, Wicked, Hamilton and more.

Other performances at the Beasley Pavilion include Granny Shot Band on July 15 and The Last Bees on July 22. For more information, contact the Portage Area Chamber of Commerce at 608-742-6242.

Get in on Canoes on Parade!
People have come from many places to visit the Canoes on Parade in Portage. The canoes are the talk of the town! If you haven't seen the canoes, you still have time.

Come see the upright canoes painted with various themes by local artists. Nine fiberglass canoes are up around Portage. Locals and visitors alike can stand in front of the upright canoes -- creating a close resemblance to portaging a canoe -- and pose for pictures, then share them on social media.

Columbia, Dane County CASA merger
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) programs serving Dane and Columbia Counties have undergone a merger.

CASA programs recruit, train and support community volunteers in order to advocate for children under the protection of the courts due to abuse or neglect. CASA has established its presence in both Dane and Columbia Counties, working closely with the court systems as well as human services. With this merger,
effective June 1, redundant administrative needs will be met with greater efficiency. The programs are a part of the Canopy Center umbrella organization.

Canopy Center’s Executive Director, Meaghan Henry, has a history with the CASA program, having been a part of the Dane County CASA program since 2013. Last summer Henry made the transition to the role of executive director, and shortly after began working on this merger with the Columbia County CASA
Director, Cheri Dvorak. Dvorak will serve as the CASA Program Director overseeing both counties.

Board members from Columbia County CASA will join the Canopy Center board to continue to oversee and support the efforts of the program. In order to become a volunteer advocate for CASA, a community member must undergo thirty hours of training using National CASA curriculum. A class of thirteen new advocates completed training at the end of May and will be sworn in by the courts in June to serve CASA of Dane & Columbia Counties.

“This new class of advocates shows real heart for the work of supporting families in our community. We look forward to getting them assigned to work with children this summer,” says Cheri Dvorak, CASA Program Director.

For more information, contact Cheri Dvorak, Executive Director, Columbia County CASA at 608-745-9977. CASA is located in Portage at 311 E. Wisconsin St., Suite 107; PO Box 841.

Rediscovering Fort Winnebago
A local family story going back to at least the 1880s claimed that an unusual barn on a Town of Marcellon farm was actually a barracks which had been moved from the site of Fort Winnebago. For all its historical importance, little remains of Fort Winnebago today beyond an archaeological footprint. None of the timber frame garrison buildings were thought to be in existence. Could a fort structure have eluded the public eye for nearly 200 years, surviving into modern times?

By 2021, time was of the essence to investigate the story surrounding what had now become an unassuming pile of old timbers residing in a cow pasture. Does the remarkable tale stand the tests of buildings archaeology and historical research? Examine the evidence: Click here.

Warmer weather is here, which for Adams-Columbia Electric Cooperative (ACEC) means it’s summer storm season. ACEC does their best to provide safe, reliable energy for local members, but sometimes Mother Nature brings major storms to the area that are out of anyone’s control.

What causes power outages? Many outages are caused by weather, animals, and nature but there are other ways outages occur.
