March 6th - 10th - Ormondale Second Harvest Food Drive

food drive

Consider these startling facts:
  • 1 in 3 kids in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties do not have enough food to eat every single day
  • 1 in 10 people in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties rely on food from Second Harvest Food Bank every single month
  • Nearly 40% of Second Harvest Food Bank's clients are children

The good news is we have the power to make a difference in local hunger.  We are hosting a Food and Fund Drive to help connect local hungry families to the healthy and nutritious food they need to thrive.
  • Please consider making a donation of non-perishable food in the Second Harvest food barrels at Ormondale from March 6-10.  They will be near the front office.
Most-Needed Foods

The Food Bank accepts all non-perishable food donations, but especially needs these nutritious items:
  • Meals in a can (soup, stew, chili)
  • Tuna or canned chicken
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned foods with pop-top lids
  • Canned fruit in its own juice or water
  • Low-sodium canned vegetables
  • Olive or canola oil
  • Spices
  • Low-sugar whole grain cereals
  • Healthy snacks (granola bars, nuts, dried fruit)
*Please avoid items packed in glass. No candy or soda please.

February Superfood!

Full of Asparagus

By Mr. Ahlbach's  Class

Asparagus is a very healthy superfood that you should eat.  It has many vitamins like A, B, C, E, and K.  Asparagus is rich in antioxidant nutrients and helps with inflammation and your digestion.  Asparagus also strengthens your bones and eyesight.  It also prevents cancer and helps with hair loss.  If you are worried or stressed, asparagus helps calm your body down.  We bet you didn't realize that it takes almost two years for asparagus to grow and be harvested.  This healthy vegetable can be BBQ, steamed, and roasted.  Let's add baked, broiled, and sizzled too!  Asparagus makes a great dinner choice that we hope you will try.  You can even use the recipe below if you like.

Ms. Grech's class made a healthy recipe we hope you will try at home.  After a taste test at school, Ormondale Students had the following to say regarding the Asparagus Sticks:
" I love it! Make it again! Those were awesome! Can we have more!
The breadcrumbs rock!  Yummy!"  And then there was the occasional,
"It was too salty!" and "No thank you."

Young Inklings Book Contest - Enter by March 15th

Take your writing to the next level and submit your story or poem for our 9th annual Inklings Book!   Enter by March 15th!

The Society of Young Inklings, a local non-profit, publishes an annual anthology of the stories and poems of talented young writers, and each year we hold a contest to see whose pieces will be included. We are looking for fresh new voices to publish in our anthology. Your kids could become published authors!

Young writers in grades 1-8 with stories or poems are encouraged to enter the contest. Submissions must be in final draft and students must commit to completing an editing process if their piece is chosen. Pieces that are chosen will go through a traditional revision process similar to how publishing houses get books ready for publication. Young writers will be assigned a mentor to guide them through the process. For submissions that are not chosen, those students will receive a letter that gives some concrete and encouraging feedback.
