Tribe Explores Commercial Maple Syrup Operation


Years in the making, an idea to explore the commercial viability of a tribal maple syrup operation was set in motion as the sap in the Menominee forest’s maple trees began to flow.


On Thursday, April 3, the Menominee Tribal Department of Agriculture and Food Systems hosted a maple workshop at the Ag Department building in Keshena where participants received updates about the Tribe’s maple syrup pilot operation.

Temporary Overnight Homeless Shelter now open


The Menominee Indian Tribe announced the opening of a Temporary Overnight Homeless Shelter to provide a warm bed and shower for those in need.


The shelter is located at the Agricultural & Food System’s Building at W2776 Chief Little Wave Road in Keshena.


The shelter will be offered through April 18, 2025 between the hours of 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM.


To ensure accommodations, individuals must call between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to confirm their need for shelter that night. The shelter will only open if requests are received.

MTS Kindergarteners experience tree tapping 


On March 27, kindergarteners from Menominee Tribal School participated in a maple syrup drilling and bagging excursion near Neopit. This event took place during the latter part of the maple syrup collecting season, as many trees were still producing sap.

Menominee County voters follow statewide trends in spring general election


The spring general election in Wisconsin, held on April 1, saw a significant increase in voter turnout, particularly in Menominee County, where 50.3% of registered voters participated.

Latest 13 moons event tries to squash some assimilated attitudes about weeds as it promotes traditional spring seasonal eating


On March 25, the latest 13 moons event, sponsored by the College of Menominee Nation Sustainable Development Institute and the Sovereign Equity Fund was held at the Menominee Cultural Museum.


The workshops aimed to enhance understanding and practices related to traditional Menominee food culture in relation to the monthly seasons.


March, known as Wanāēw Kēsoq or Crusted Snow Moon, signifies a time when snow is still present but signs of spring emerge. Historically, during this season, Menominee people relied on preserved foods, particularly dried squash, referred to as Mahkāhsow Wīnāēmaehkwan in the Menominee language, which was a key focus of the celebration.

We all want what’s best for our children and to support them as they learn and grow. The Tribal Administration has tasked the Tribal Education Department with revisiting the current mission of the Department and to ensure that its educational approach reflects the Menominee way of life.

 

With support from the community, a work group has been developing a mission and vision for the educational path of Tribal youth that aligns with existing educational programs, but takes into consideration career preparation, behavior challenges and new educational resources.

Spring Celebration honors tradition and growth


With the spring growing season fast approaching, some of Menominee Tribe’s youngest gardeners and their families prepared for a successful growing season through traditional Menominee songs and dances.


On Friday, March 21, the Nicianak 4-H Club and the Menominee Department of Agriculture and Food Systems hosted a Spring Celebration and Seed Blessing at the DAFS Building in Keshena.

Spring Community Cleanup April 7-11


Spring Community Clean-up 2025 for Menominee Reservation and County is scheduled to take place Monday, April 7 through Friday, April 11.

Drug Addiction Education Forum April 16


All are welcome and urged to attend a drug addiction education forum taking place in the Five Clans Ballroom area of Menominee Casino Resort on Wednesday, April 16. The events begins with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

CMN Summer Farmer’s Market set to start June 6


Outdoor summer’s farmers’ markets for College of Menominee Nation (CMN), also called Kehtekaewak Farmers’ Markets, are scheduled to take place in the Keshena CMN campus parking lot most Fridays from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. with a kickoff event scheduled for June 6 at the aforementioned time.

Menominee Tribal School hosts round dance event


Menominee Tribal School students and their families got a chance to hone their dancing skills and gave students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, program a chance to raise funds for a spring field trip.


On Thursday, March 27, the Menominee Tribal School hosted a Round Dance event that was cancelled from an earlier date.

Community shows support for future scholars


Supporters of the Menominee Indian School District’s athletic and scholarship programs opened up their hearts and wallets to raise funds for MNS students planning on being involved in athletics or attending college during the MISD Scholarship Gala at the Menominee Casino Resort on March 28.

Messages may include any information that is considered essential for the safety of the community, such as law enforcement activity as well as other relevant safety and community information. Weather warnings from the National Weather Service will also be rebroadcast.
