A Mini Arts Blast Today and Another Tomorrow
Before getting into Arts Blast, I want to share emails from a friend and artist, Marjolein Scott.
Marjo and her husband lived in the Marsh Harbour area of Abaco for years, moving off island in February of this year. “We did not want to go through one more hurricane season,” she told me. “The house was on a bluff, close to the Abaco Sound, with the Cays in front of us, but (at a) considerable distance. A beautiful spot, and an amazing house.”

That house is now gone, the second house lost to hurricanes by the people who bought it. Marjo has been in touch with friends in the islands and sent me this yesterday: ““It's been terrible, but most people that I love are ok. A few are still missing. The stories are heart breaking.”

She added, “Cays are bad. Most resorts are gone or have serious damage. But anything south of Cherokee is relatively unscathed. (A) friend lives in Bahama Palm Shores and her house only lost a few roof tiles. Same with (another friend) in Sandy Point. But everyone is running out of supplies.”

Marjo is treasurer of the Abaco Cancer Society and reports, “We've started an airlift with a private plane to Treasure Cay.” The first flight had already gone in when she emailed. “The runway at Sandy Point is open, but the road up to MH (Marsh Harbour) is still bad. But Tom, the owner and pilot of the plane, is taking some ex-military guys, who will help clean the roads with local contractors.” She had heard reports the Treasure Cay airport would open today but I have not confirmed that.

Marjo asked me to share this with people asking how to contribute to the rescue effort.

“If you know anyone who would like to help, please have them write a cheque to the Abaco Cancer Society. … The banks in Marsh Harbour have been flattened. Veronica Saunders, our patient liaison, will make sure that the money will get to the correct people.”

She added, “The P.M. has waived all VAT and taxes on incoming goods.”

I’m sharing this LuminAID link, not as an endorsement but for your information and consideration. I bought one of these after the last hurricane that came through the Treasure Coast but have not had to use it. I know the light works well and will try its phone charging ability this weekend.

Heathcote Botanical Gardens Reopens to the Public

Friday, September 6, 2019  Hours 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

A walk throught the Garden will ease your cabin fever. The Garden is also the perfect place to meditate on being grateful for the Treasure Coast being spared the wrath of Dorian, and to send healing energy to our friends in the Bahamas.

Our treasured Heathcote made it through Dorian unscathed but we could use some helping hands to put things back together - both in the office and the garden. If you can spare a few hours of time, please join us! Bring your gloves and a hat - you'll be welcome with open arms!

Smithsonian Free Admission Day
Every year, Smithsonian magazine offers everyone, not only subscribers, free admission to a network of participating museums round the country. This is the fifteenth year and it’s the Smithsonian Year of Music. There are a few rules to heed and steps to take but it’s easy enough. Actually, it’s fun. When you go to the website, you may pick any state to find out which museums and cultural institutions are available, so even if you end up going to one in your own neighborhood, that search can open your eyes to what fun lies beyond the horizon. Bottles? Southern Food and Beverage? New Orleans Jazz? Quilts? Mining? There’s a museum for that!

For example, I know I’ll be using my free tickets to visit one on the Treasure Coast, so I put in my zip code and followed the path to downloading tickets. Then, getting curious, I clicked on Florida, then on a couple of other states, and before I knew it, I was making a list of places I want to see and my armchair-traveler side was all packed and ready to go! Go ahead. Try it!
There’s pretty much only one catch. Do all your research and dreaming before clicking on Generate Ticket because once you do that, you’re committed. No backsies. You’ll be downloading a pass that gets you and a companion into the museum you’ve chosen. The date is Saturday September 21. The names that popped up near my zip code: Vero Beach Museum of Art ; Manatee Observation and Education Center; The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast ; Historical Society of Martin County ; and Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts .

Sophie Bentham-Wood, director of marketing and communications at Vero Beach Museum of Art, said docents will be available for tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. They’ll highlight art that features musical themes as well as interactive displays. “Families are invited to visit the Museum’s Art Zone where hands-on activities will include a variety of musical instruments,” she said. Treasure Coast Percussion has plans for a drum circle in Holmes Great Hall at 1 p.m. Drums and other instruments will be provided and there’s no charge.

I haven’t seen it online this year but I think I remember that some museums reached their limit early in the campaign in 2018, so don’t wait to start exploring.

Artwork Loan Program at State Capitol
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) is highlighting Florida-based photographers and artists in the state Capitol building. The primary interest for artwork, which will be displayed throughout Commissioner of Agriculture Nikki Fried’s suite on the plaza level of the Capitol, is natural scenic views of Florida’s landscapes and waters. This includes but is not limited to springs, rivers, beaches, forests, prairies, and wildlife. If you have an interest in this artwork loan program, please contact Joey Hicks, Director of Administration, at Joey.Hicks@FreshFromFlorida.com or 850-617-7000.
