Message from the Mayor

Township officials are working to get the Disaster Declaration for Union County that will give Cranford residents access to FEMA assistance. I continue ongoing talks with Governor Murphy, Senator Booker, Congressman Malinowski and neighboring mayors and will keep it up until we are designated. We have provided documentation to the County and FEMA representatives have been in Cranford so we are waiting to learn if Union County will be eligible for funding to provide immediate assistance for residents.

Equally important is the long term issue. We must be laser focused on the permanent solution of flood control. This has been talked about and debated for way too long and it is simply unacceptable. I have used every interview this week to call attention to accelerating and implementing a flood control project and I've reached out to mayors from towns on the Rahway River to band together and be vocal and visible advocates for our residents. Our residents are looking to us and I will not stop until there is an approved plan, funding in place and a project schedule. I will continue to report back to you on the immediate and long term solutions.

Thank you everyone for your patience and cooperation as we work our way through these difficult days. As always, especially during trying times, Cranford shines because of generous, caring residents. I am grateful you choose to call Cranford home. You make our town a better place.

Be safe.

Hazardous Waste Drop-Off - This Sunday
Fire Department Update
The Fire Department responded last evening to a fire in the Conservation Center property. Piles of storm debris were burning. We received assistance from several other communities in containing the fire. The Fire Department and Union County Hazmat Team conducted air monitoring to ensure safety of the responders and surrounding homes. While operating at the site, neighboring fire departments covered the Township from Fire HQ on Springfield Avenue as part of the County Fire Mutual Aid Plan. Fortunately, there were no injuries. We remind residents to please be careful not to place hazardous materials with flood debris for pick up.
Building Department Update
Due to the unprecedented flooding caused by Hurricane Ida and the damages experienced by Cranford residents, the Township will expedite permits for storm recovery and waive fees for certain flood related items such as boilers, HVAC, and water heaters.

It is understood that certain work must be done immediately, and therefore a permit may be submitted after the work has started per the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23) as “Emergency Work”. However, you must notify the Building Department within 24 hours and permits should be submitted to our office within five (5) business days. Verification of damage will assist the Building Department in determining the validity of the damage and photos should be provided. Please contact the Building Department by telephone (908) 709-7213 or email [email protected]. Permit applications are available here.

Permits for these items are still required and necessary to ensure the safety of our residents. Permits are also required for demolition and removal of flood damaged building materials, such as drywall, kitchen, and bathroom cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and any electrical or mechanical equipment for heating and cooling. Additional information on some of the most common types of permit applications, can be found on the Helpful Handouts page.

For suspected structural damage or foundation issues that are an immediate hazard, contact the construction official at [email protected] or 908-709-7213. If substantial damage is suspected (damages that exceed 50 percent of the value of the building, land not included) contact the Township Floodplain Administrator, Jacque Dirmann at [email protected].
