PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ~ PLEASE TAKE NOTICE:

Potential Rabid Fox in Union Vale or Nearby

Last night a resident of Union Vale on Oswego Road was attacked by an "insane" fox as he was putting out the garbage at approximately 6:30 pm. The fox attacked this man and bit him repeatedly on his wrists and legs as he tried to fight it off.

Our resident was taken to Vassar Hospital but the fox ran off and as far as we know is still in the area.

BEWARE.

Our local DEC Conservation Officer or ECO, Kevin Wamsley said that when an animal with rabies reaches that stage they are usually dead within 72 hours, but we all must be vigilant.

What to do if you encounter a potentially rabid animal:

  1. If bitten or injured immediately call 9-1-1
  2. If you suspect an animal you see is rabid call:

  • DEC Conservation Emergency Hotline - 877-457-5680
  • Local ECO Kevin Wamsley - 914-263-7819
  • Dutchess County Sheriff's Office 845-486-3800
  • Union Vale Animal Control Officer - Mary Jean Calvi- 845-724-5600 ext 8

Please contact Town Hall after calling the proper authorities listed above so we can share any sighting information with the community.
