Hello Tutors!
Did you know that our funding depends on demonstrating student progress?
We demonstrate progress by assessing every student on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), and then reassessing them after they have completed 40 hours of instruction. Students dislike TABEs because the test is long, but reassessing is the only way we can truly see if a student is progressing. More importantly, these tests help keep Seeds FREE for all.
If you know that the student you are working with is due for a reassessment, please encourage them to take it as soon as possible. Also, if you feel the student with whom you are working is not making progress, please mention it to a Site Coordinator. They may help you, connect you with one of our Volunteer Coordinators (Christine and Kim) or connect you with our VP of Programming (Carmine). We want students and tutors to feel successful!

WOW! 15 YEARS!
West Site Coordinator Chris Richards celebrated a very special milestone last month. Aside from our President Bonnie Entler, he has the longest continuous tenure at Seeds with 15 years! Chris joined the team right after college and never looked back. He's seen expansion to more church basements, then centralization and consolidation with the W. 25th site, and then the expansion with Seeds East and the Virtual Classroom. He is the keeper of the organization's institutional history and the creator of the Have You Heard video series. Seeds is lucky to have him!
Fun fact: When Seeds was founded in 1997, he was just 13 years old.

25TH TUTOR CHALLENGE!
Last month we shared the 25th Anniversary Challenge for Students. This month, we're doing the same for you! There are 3 WAYS TO WIN:
- TUTOR Every 25 hours you tutor, you are entered into a drawing. Each classroom will have a drawing every 2 months.
- RECRUIT You will receive 5 tickets for every new tutor recruit that attends new tutor training. You'll receive additional tickets when the recruit tutors for 5 hours and 25 hours. A drawing will be held every 2 months.
- ATTEND All tutors are eligible for attending 1 bonus ticket for attending any professional development workshops offered by Seeds.
25TH DONOR MATCH
A generous, long-time supporter has made a pledge to contribute $25,000 in honor of our 25th Anniversary if the community raises an additional $25,000. He will match, dollar for dollar, all NEW and INCREASED contributions between now and the end of our anniversary year (June 30, 2023).
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS
-
If you gave $50 last year and you give $60 this year, that's an increased donation. The challenger will MATCH this amount.
-
If you've given in the past, but not in the last few years, you will be counted as a new donor. The challenger will MATCH this amount.
-
If you've never given before, but do so this year, that's a new donation. The challenge will MATCH that amount.
-
if you give the SAME as you've given in the past, or you aren't able to give at all, that's ok! You're still going to get a great, big Thank You for your generosity. As tutors, showing up every day for our students is PRICELESS.

CHANGE AGENT
Adult education publishers increase their profit margins by using content that is available in the public domain. The content is older and sometimes uses language that we don't use today. It's easy to understand why students do not find some of the materials so interesting.
So what's a tutor to do? Consider browsing The Change Agent for content to read with a student. The Change Agent is a biannual magazine for adult educators and learners published by the New England Literacy Resource Center (NELRC) at World Education. Featuring issues on topics that are relevant to adult literacy learners, and articles written by adult learners, The Change Agent promotes social action as an important part of the adult learning experience.
We used to provide copies of these in the classroom and our students would devour them, so we already know that they are fans of this adult education magazine. So how can you incorporate them? We have purchased a subscription for tutors to use. Log onto https://changeagent.nelrc.org/ and use Seeds as a username and password. Find a topic that you like, and browse the issue for content.
If you are a virtual tutor you can share your screen with a student. If you are in-person, we can print articles for you, or you can use one of our class laptops to view the articles alongside a student. Look for ways to connect the content to what students are working on in class, or connect them to stories you hear on the news. Use the articles to help students work on comprehension skills like analyzing, synthesizing, summarizing, and paraphrasing. Ask the students to react or respond to the article. Encourage them to consider writing an article of their own, and keep your eyes open for the next call for submissions in your Tutor Newsletter.

BECAUSE 1 BOOKCLUB IS NEVER ENOUGH
Scrolling through Instagram, we stumbled across a familiar face: Kara Krawiec, Seeds East Coordinator, hanging out with ladies from the NOLA IGNITE book club this summer.
In honor of National Literacy Month, be like Kara -- join a book club...or two.
