Being a Good Neighbor with Pesticide Applications | |
Being a good neighbor with pesticide applications means thinking first, about what your pesticide application might do to harm to your neighbors’ crops. This is not only good citizenship, it is also the law. Pesticide labels state that you must make every effort to reduce the risk of drift to non-target species, and there are state laws that require some pesticides not to be used after certain dates to protect the crops of others.

Spring Weed Control in Pastures |
Weed control can be an important part of any ranch management plan but why do we practice weed control? It is to reduce the competition between the weeds and the grass. When done properly and coupled with proper soil fertility and grazing management, it should not have to be done every year.

Springtime in Oklahoma
A friend recently sent me a card, "Happy Spring....and I don't mean that as a threat." Severe weather and Oklahoma spring season go hand in hand. This time our county was hugely affected. Our support is with those who have damage and losses. Our appreciation is for those who help their neighbors and the many work crews that cleared streets and restored power. There is still so much to do.
What is not captured in news coverage is the "heart" of homes, businesses, and public spaces damaged and destroyed. Communities across our county will build back, with lots of heart and hard work. Be patient with each other as we work through the heartache, loss, and cleaning up the mess.
In many locations all the trees are down or damaged to the point of removal. Others are in various conditions of damage. The utility crews are also clearing lines to protect our power supply during future storms. In the fall, we can help with guidance for selecting trees, evaluating placement/site and how to plant them for success.
Resources are available for Managing Storm Damages Trees (click) This fact sheet will walk you through things to consider for safety, rehabilitation, or removal.

Happy May Day
It's a chilly start for May 1st. I feel like I'm running late, but the cooler weather for April reminds me that we always say April 15 as average last frost date, but watch the weather forecast for any given year! This weekend I finally got some of my garden planted.
It's not too late to plant (or replant if needed). Warm season vegetables can be planted in May and up to about June 10th. Tomatoes, peppers, melons, cucumbers, okra and sweet potatoes prefer warm soil temperatures to grow well. There has been alot going on locally, but you can still get your vegetables planted for summer produce!
Many will have a sunny spot that previously had shade. Vegetables are something that can benefit from full sun and could fill a blank space until a more permanent planting is considered in the fall. Containers are a good way to go, if your future plans for a space are undecided.

Oklahoma Produce Safety Update:
Annual Produce Farm Registration for Vegetable Growers
Annual Produce Farm Registration and Exemption Workbook
for market growers and farmer's market produce vendors
It is now time to update your farm registration with Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry to inform us that your farm is exempt from the Produce Safety Rule. Due to the recent adjustment for inflation, any farm that sold less than $30,509 in annual produce sales averaged over the past three years is exempt from the Produce Safety Rule. Any farm that sells more than that amount is required by the state to complete an annual farm registration so that we can determine if your farm is exempt or if it is to be inspected.
To register your farm, all you have to do is complete the form at this link: https://forms.office.com/g/smQNSBHW11 or scan the above QR code.
