Cattle Producers are Battling Flies and Ticks this Summer

Fly and tick populations have increased, which means cattle producers are fighting an uphill battle this summer with these blood-sucking pests. The cattle industry suffers $1.3 billion in losses annually from horn flies alone. They are considered the No. 1 external parasite for cattle across the country.

2023 Wheat harvest Review

Initial predictions for this year’s yields were grim, and although some wheat fields were failed by insurance adjusters or baled for forage, producers were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the wheat they cut.

Teamwork Recognized

Last year Courtney Dekalb-Myers (Cleveland County) and I worked on a collaborative program on native plants called Grow Local - Native Plants Workshop.

We were recognized at the OAEAA state meeting for the Communication Award for Event Promotional Package. This category is for how the program is marketed to the public, using different avenues of outreach. We partnered with the Pioneer Library System to offer the program in three counties. Our outreach was done on social media, our website, via this newsletter, and online calendars.

What's Hot and What's Not?

Did you plant peppers or other plants this year that were not the type you thought you were getting? I did! It's not that unusual to get plant tags swapped or to have an honest mistake on occasion. This year it has been epidemic across the country, especially with peppers. Read more below....

OBU Serve Shawnee

August 21st, 2023. Morning, time is pending. Generally 8:00 to 11:00ish

OBU students will flood our community for a day of service as they begin their freshman first semester. This is their home away from home for the next few years. Some of our master gardeners will be leading teams at sites around town. Let Carla know if you would like to help! Tom is passing the torch, so we need to keep this flame going! If you area a master gardeners and have a heart for college students and this project, we could use a coordinator for future involvement.

The Pottawatomie County Cattlemen's Association would like to invite you to the first of their fall educational meetings for 2023.

Join us on August 22 at 6:00 pm at the Tecumseh High School Alumni Center. Our speaker for the evening will be Mike Trammell, OSU Pottawatomie County Ag Educator and Multi-County Agronomist.

The title of Mike's presentation is "Planning for Fall Forage Production".

Our meal sponsor for the evening will be Gilbert Insurance and Tecumseh Tag Agency.
