Spring Planted Oats

Spring-planted oats can provide many possibilities for producers. An oat crop can provide a quick, small-grains pasture with good forage quality that can bridge the gap until summer pasture is available, provide cover for a summer crop, or it can provide high-quality hay.

2023 Cattlewomen's Boot Camp Registration now Open

The Oklahoma State University Extension Cattlewomen’s Boot Camp has opened registration for its next session June 5-7 at the Creek County Fairgrounds in Kellyville, Oklahoma.

The event launched in 2022 to offer female ranchers a fun and engaging learning experience in the production, financial management and market strategy involved in operating a beef cow/calf operation.

Winter Tasks

Pruning dormant trees and shrubs should be done now. Skip the early spring blooming trees and shrubs, until after they bloom. This includes azaleas, forsythia, quince, redbud to name a few.

When pruning trees always remember the 3 D's. Remove any Dead, Damaged and Diseased limbs first. You don't want to remove more than 1/3 of the plant material at one time. So, extensive pruning may take a few seasons to complete the process.

Spring Bulbs

It won't be long until spring bulbs are cheering us on towards spring. Daffodils are one of my personal favorites! Many of these are already showing their leaves and will be blooming this month. Daffodils are hardier than tulips in our area and are one of our best bulbs for naturalizing.

You want to enjoy their blooms while they last and then leave the leaves alone until they naturally die back. You should mow around them for the first few mowings. When we leave the leaves in place, it allows them to store energy back into the bulb for next years blooms.

One of the arborists at Scissortail Park told me they have done mass plantings in the park. If you are in OKC later this month, it will be a beautiful sight to see!
