Time to Think About Winter Forage Needs
There is an old saying, "farming is a gamble, but planning improves the odds." This is definitely true when it comes to planning for your cattle's winter forage needs. Follow the link below for more information.

Marketing Hay for Horses
Marketing horse hay is just a different business. Ask horse owners what is important when it comes to choosing hay and most will say quality is important, but good quality horse hay can be difficult to define.

Armyworms are Still Marching!
Armyworms are marching across the state, as we often see this time of year. For lawns and ornamentals, keep an eye out for them, especially if you have fescue lawn areas. The inverted Y on the head of the caterpillar helps identify this pest. See Photo on right.

See our Ornamental and Lawn Pest Control for Homeowners OSU Fact sheet EPP-7306 See page 11 for armyworm control options.
For Pasture and Rangeland see OSU Current Report CR-7193

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mike Trammell for Crops and Pastures or
Carla Smith for Ornamentals and Lawns, both of us can be reached at 405-273-7683 or by email.

Kissing Bug
Keep an eye out for this one...
The first documented Kissing Bug specimen for Pottawatomie County was brought into our office in late August.

This insect can carry a tropical disease and is being tracked in many states, including Oklahoma and Texas. Chagas disease, Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted to humans and canines by infected kissing bugs. This sample will be tested to see if it is a carrier or not.

If you spot this insect, do not touch it!
Collect the sample with gloved hands and do not directly handle the insect. There are some that look similar, so the link below will help identify and gives instructions on how to collect a sample.
