Selecting Spring Bulbs

Fall catalogs with spring bulbs for sale are arriving in mailboxes and bulbs will arrive in stores soon. Shop early for best selection, but don't plant until late October or November for our location.

Tulips are often treated like an annual in central Oklahoma. Other bulbs are more reliable for perennial spring shows. Select some fun bulbs for spring color. Those first signs of spring are so welcome after winter!

Landscaping Design

Shawnee and surrounding communities have been hit hard for landscapes for a few years. Ice storms, deep freezes, and storm damage have left many needing to renovate.

October is a good time to plant! While you may not be ready yet, depending on repairs, October and March are great times of year to install new trees and shrubs, giving you a couple of choices for best results.

A good landscape begins with site evaluation and planning.

Master Gardener Enrollment is Open for 2024

Anyone interested in becoming an OSU Master Gardener Volunteer can sign up for the course that will begin in January. October is enrollment month! Seating is limited to 20, enrollment and a deposit saves your seat. Payment is made in the office, by cash or check.

The title of JJ's presentation is "The Cattle Market Outlook".

Native Pecan Field Day - Oct 12th

Okfuskee County at Leon Bailey's Pecan Farm, 363112 E. 960 Rd, Paden, OK

The Leon Bailey Family, Oklahoma State University Pecan Management, Okfuskee County Extension, and the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association are hosting a Native Pecan Field Day on October 12 from 2:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Check-in will begin at 2:30 pm and the meeting will be at 3 p.m.

A few topics that may be included:

· Assessing Forested Area – Marking Pecan Trees

· Developing a Native Grove

· Equipment for Tree Cleanup

· Thinning out Remaining Pecans

· Native Pecan Inputs

· Grazing & Forage

· Prolonged Drought Stress Effects

· Wildlife Depredation

· Updates on the 2023 Season including insect & disease observations

Anyone can attend the free event, but registration is required by October 10 since dinner will be provided. Please bring a lawn chair and plan to stay for dinner in the grove at the conclusion of the field day. This is a river bottom area, a second location is reserved in case of wet weather conditions.
