Late Summer Forage Quality a Factor in Protein Supplementation

As summer comes to an end, cow-calf producers should prepare for a decline in forage quality.

The nutritional value of tallgrass prairie forage is rapidly decreasing as the seasons change, and protein supplementation may be vital for fall-calving herds.

OBU Serve Shawnee Day

Historic Larch-Miller Park was one of the sites for the OBU students to serve on August 21st.

Redbud Park on Broadway got some needed attention for the city to be able to mow much easier. Large storm limbs had been removed, but many small sticks remained.

The Japanese Peace Garden had a good team to continue clean up for this garden that was damaged in the April 19th storm.

The Shawnee Public Library site started with a great team of students and more joined to assist. Vines, seedlings, and weeds were removed and bagged. City of Shawnee assisted with hauling off debris! Thanks to Larry the library security guard for keeping a watchful eye while students worked.

This workshop is for those who wish to learn about Horticulture and Ag business and production resources. There will be a tour on Oct 17th, details will be available soon. Register online for the workshop on Oct 18th.

The Pottawatomie County Cattlemen's Association would like to invite you to their second fall educational meeting for 2023.

Join us on September 19th at 6:30 pm at the Tecumseh High School Alumni Center. Our speaker for the evening will be OSU Area Livestock Specialist, Brian Freking.

The title of Brian's presentation is "Parasite Resistance to Anthelmintic Products and New Implant Guideline for Beef Producers".

Our meal sponsor for the evening will be Shawnee Feeds.

Fall Turf and Landscape Field Day

Pre-Registration deadline is Sept 6, but you can register in person on that date.

Native Pecan Field Day - Oct 12th

Okfuskee County at Leon Bailey's Pecan Farm, 363112 E. 960 Rd, Paden, OK

The Leon Bailey Family, Oklahoma State University Pecan Management, Okfuskee County Extension, and the Oklahoma Pecan Growers Association are hosting a Native Pecan Field Day on October 12 from 2:30 – 6:00 p.m.

Check-in will begin at 2:30 pm and the meeting will be at 3 p.m.

A few topics that may be included:

· Assessing Forested Area – Marking Pecan Trees

· Developing a Native Grove

· Equipment for Tree Cleanup

· Thinning out Remaining Pecans

· Native Pecan Inputs

· Grazing & Forage

· Prolonged Drought Stress Effects

· Wildlife Depredation

· Updates on the 2023 Season including insect & disease observations

Anyone can attend the free event, but registration is required by October 10 since dinner will be provided. Please bring a lawn chair and plan to stay for dinner in the grove at the conclusion of the field day.
