Columbiana County Port Authority recently approved a service agreement for installation of an electric vehicle charging station. The board approved a five-year service agreement with ChargePoint. Research was conducted in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties which showed there are enough electric vehicles to make the charging station viable. Drivers will be able to pull up and use a credit card or the mobile app to pay for the electric charge just as someone would at a gasoline pump.
The community recognizes the shift happening in electric vehicles with Lordstown Motors unveiling an all-electric pickup truck and GM and LG Chem developing an electric vehicle battery plant in the area. The Voltage Valley continues to demonstrate Ohio's leadership in electric vehicles!

PCFO Community Spotlight: Silverton
|
|
Village: Silverton
Mayor: John A. Smith
Population: 4,750
Net zero buildings and a clean energy future! The Village of Silverton has been implementing a number of financially smart, emission reduction strategies, including electric aggregation, solar installation, and LED streetlights upgrades. These local actions have made their community a green, sustainable place to live. In December 2019, they were awarded a contract to install a solar panel system with a 25-year production warranty. In one year, the solar panels should generate more power than the town hall uses, making it a net-positive building. The slight net surplus of power should ensure the building remains net-positive for 14 of the 25 years of the warranty period. Additionally, the Village made an expense from its general fund to replace all 316 street lights from conventional bulbs to LED.
Recently, the City of Silverton entered into its third natural gas and electric aggregation opt-out program in May 2020, and its first one to offer a 100% certified renewable energy source for residential electric as the base offer. Power a Clean Future Ohio looks forward to working with the Village of Silverton to help them continue to achieve clean energy goals.

Consuming Energy While Black
|
|
In his recent article, “Consuming Energy While Black,” University of California Berkeley Professor Maximilian Auffhammer analyzes a working paper submitted by a Ph.D. student and researcher at the Energy Institute that asks the question, “Do Black households spend more on residential energy each month compared to white households?”
The researcher utilized Census Bureau data collected from the American Community Survey that outlines a racial breakdown of households’ income, size, whether they rent or own their home, and energy expenditures for those in the sample. After accounting for a list of variables and city-specific factors, the initial analysis shows that black households pay $273 more per year for renters and a $408 more per year for homeowners.
What could be causing this disparity in energy spending? The article states that Black respondents report a higher tendency to live in more drafty homes, lower ownership of highly efficient, Energy Star Appliances, and lower usage of energy efficiency rebates. As is so often the case, energy efficiency seems to be the culprit.
Read for yourself the other questions derived from the analysis and the potential long-term implications of a persistent energy cost inequity. PCFO continues to recognize that environmental justice is racial justice. Local communities can play a critical role in addressing systemic racism in every part of our society.
