Local Action Update:
Columbus One Step Closer to Clean Energy and Lower Electric Bills
|
|
On Tuesday, July 7, 2020 Columbus City Council
held a committee hearing
a
nd moved a step closer on their plans to provide 100% renewable energy by 2022. The community choice aggregation program is an opt-out program and will be on the ballot this fall.
Community Choice Aggregation allows residents and businesses to have a direct impact on providing clean and renewable energy. Additional benefits of aggregation include:
- Provides competitive energy supply costs for Columbus residents
- Drives renewable energy development and supports the clean energy industry
- Enables clean energy workforce development
- Creates large demand for locally generated clean energy
- Supports community and policy goals while addressing climate change in an equitable way
PCFO Executive Director Joe Flarida provided testimony at the hearing. He encouraged Council to listen closely to communities of color and low-income residents about energy issues and concerns. For far too long, these residents have historically been left out of conversations like these and the city can make real progress by ensuring aggregation provides tangible benefits to communities that are disproportionately impacted by climate change, poor air quality, and economic stressors.
Flarida also advised the city to prioritize purchasing renewable energy from in-state sources. PCFO supports building more renewable energy project in Ohio, allowing us to employ more Ohioans and train the next generation of solar installers and wind technicians. Local governments are in a prime position to engage and lead in this effort. You can read his full testimony
