Big Wins for Clean Energy on Election Day

Voters in Columbus and Grove City passed ballot issues – Issue 1 and 10, respectively – to approve community choice aggregation for 100% renewable energy for their cities. Issue 1 passed overwhelming, 76% to 24% and will make the City of Columbus the largest purchaser of renewable energy in the Midwest and one of the largest in the country. Issue 10 also passed convincingly in Grove City by 63% to 37%.

PCFO endorsed both of these ballot issues and celebrated their passage. “These two ballot issues signal a monumental shift for the clean energy economy in Ohio. Issue 1 passing will place Columbus in a national leadership role on climate action and renewable energy development. We saw strong support for both ballot issues from Republican and Democratic voters. Issue 10 in Grove City will further boost renewable energy jobs in the regions and provide reliable, affordable energy to Grove City residents. Ohioans support renewable energy and they want to see more clean energy jobs in their communities. OEC & PCFO Applaud Clean, Renewable Energy Investment Planned in Northwest Ohio

Last Wednesday, Toledo City Council approved plans to move forward with a newly planned utility-scale solar array in northwest Ohio, along with Lucas County and other area communities. Collectively through the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition (NOAC), partners are looking to purchase up to 25 percent of their electric power through clean, renewable energy. NOAC intends to construct a large utility-scale solar array in northwest Ohio to satisfy these energy needs.

Ohio Environment Council’s Vice President of Energy Policy Miranda Leppla said, “Earlier this week, we saw Columbus voters overwhelmingly approve Issue 1, moving the city to 100 percent clean, renewable energy. This collective action by communities in Northwest Ohio is another example of Ohio cities and towns choosing to transition away from dirty, harmful energy sources and toward a clean, renewable energy future that benefits our health while combating the impacts of climate change. While Ohio’s state legislature continues to impede the growth of the renewable energy sector, local communities like Columbus and Toledo are stepping up to lead the way by investing in our future. The OEC applauds Toledo, Lucas County, and other Northwest Ohio communities for their commitment to help lead Ohio’s transition to a clean energy economy.”
