During this time of year, the trees in Power Ranch can become overgrown, especially the Mesquites. Over grown trees can make access for Town of Gilbert garbage collection trucks and fire trucks very difficult. For safety reasons, please make sure the canopy of your streetscape tree is trimmed up to 13 and a half feet.
Store monsoon storm debris out of public view until August 5, when the bulk trash should be placed near the street.

Bulk trash is August 7
Do not set out new items until August 5

The more you know about roof rats
|
What is a roof rat?
Roof rats
, which can grow to a body length of 10 to 12 inches, are often mistaken for squirrels and can be gray, brown or black. Their tails are hairless, scaly, and most importantly, longer than the entire length of their head and body.
These rodents pose both a health and safety risk, so you don’t want them hanging out in and around your home. Roof rats can:
- Destroy property and belongings
- Chew through wires and cause fires
- Tear drywall and insulation
- Die in your walls, creating foul odors
- Leave potentially contaminated droppings behind
Where do roof rats live?
According to a list from Terminix, Gilbert is second on the list for cities with the worst roof rat activity.
- Memphis, TN
- Gilbert, AZ
- Pleasanton, CA
- Scottsdale, AZ
- Tempe, AZ
- Sacramento, CA
- Salinas, CA
- San Bernardino, CA
- San Antonio, TX
- Plano, TX
What attracts roof rats near and in your home?
A roof rat has to eat, and your neighborhood is full of food sources. Fruits and nuts that have fallen from trees are welcome meals for these rodents. They’ll often even eat fruit that’s still on the tree. And if nothing else is available, they may find your dog’s droppings appetizing too. Just because your yard is clean doesn’t mean your neighbor’s is. Roof rats can travel hundreds of feet in the span of a night in search for food, and just may end up nesting in your yard or attic.
What are some signs you might have roof rats?
Because roof rats are nocturnal, they may be hard to physically spot in your attic. But there are some signs you can look for that will reveal they’ve probably been there:
Smudge marks: Oils and dirt can rub off the roof rat’s fur, so look for these marks, which are also referred to as “rub marks,” in your attic.
Droppings: As with any rodent, roof rats leave droppings behind.
Sounds in the attic.

The trim crew completed the annual Date Palm trimming and skinning in the Knolls Pool areas.
Crews installed new Bermuda seed to the areas near the volleyball court at the Ranch House. Traffic and reduction of irrigation during the splash pad renovations slowed the summer turf transition.
Summer annuals around the Ranch House and Carriage House were replaced, due to the excessive heat they were wilting.
The renovation crew continued the Bocce Ball Court improvements. Most of the work completed this week was for the installation of the fill dirt building up the proper grade for drainage purposes. The rain early this week slowed progress for one day as the area was extremely saturated. The crew worked on smaller details such as the grading and irrigation under the new seating area during the wet weather until we were able to operate the equipment.
Damaged trees and limbs were cleaned up this past Tuesday. One large mesquite along the east side of Ranch House Parkway just south of Haven Crest fell during the storm on Monday, July 24.
Trim Crews worked on storm cleanup requiring a day away from their regular schedule. This week the crews are focusing on removal of the mesquite beans, cutting off dead flowers from Angelita Daisies, elimination of the red and yellow yucca flower stalks, reducing the overall size of the Outback Sunrise, and trimming back plants that are overgrowing their intended areas.
A small sink hole along the north side of Haven Crest near the Carriage House was repaired, the damage was due to the rains.
Due to the significant amount of rain this past week most of the irrigation has been turned off for the week.
