HOW THE BOOKS WERE SELECTED

How the Books Were Selected

Power Read 25 is a civic engagement and reading initiative designed to celebrate the breadth, depth and enduring impact of Black women's lives. Guided by recommendations from the community, each selection was evaluated for its literary quality, historical and cultural significance, and potential to inspire meaningful conversation. Together, the books reflect a rich diversity of experiences, generations, disciplines and perspectives. The collection invites readers to learn about remarkable lives, discover new voices and engage in conversations that connect the past to the present.

A Huge Thank You

Power Read 25 was shaped by a distinguished Advisory Committee of authors, scholars, educators, journalists and literary leaders whose collective expertise helped guide the selection of the inaugural list. We are deeply grateful for their thoughtful stewardship. Read our Advisory Committee's bios on our website.
