Office of Racial Equity&Social Justice Has Powerful New Leadership!

New office will fight racism and inequality in Contra Costa

Our fight to eliminate racism and achieve equity in our County took a powerful step forward when our Board of Supervisors appointed Dr. Kendra Carr and Peter Kim as Co-Directors of our new Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice (ORESJ).

In 2020, the Board of Supervisors approved a proposal by Supervisor Federal Glover and I that authorized the creation of a new ORESJ to develop and implement principles, policies, practices, and investments that end racism and inequity in our county. This ground-breaking new office will work to ensure that county policies and practices are racially just and socially equitable across all departments.

I'm proud to have worked with Supervisor Glover and many social justice allies in Contra Costa County to establish this office. I want to especially thank the hard work of the CORE Committee of county social justice advocates who helped guide the hiring process that led to the appointment of our new Co-Directors.

The new Co-Directors for ORESJ will now work to establish the office and hire their new staff to make the office effective.

Both Dr. Carr and Mr. Kim have impressive resumes in leading this work. Dr. Carr served as Chief Program Officer and Senior Director of Research with Girls Leadership, and served as Principal of Oakland’s Holy Names High School for many years. Mr. Kim served as Managing Director of the East Bay Asian Youth Center and led the City of Oakland’s violence prevention efforts for many years.

Contra Costa is the first county to launch an Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice through an extensive community engagement process. We wanted to listen to those residents most impacted by racism and inequity in developing the priorities for this office and in hiring culturally competent Co-Directors.

Nuestra lucha para lograr la equidad en nuestro condado dio un poderoso paso adelante cuando nuestra Junta de Supervisores nombró recientemente a la Dra. Kendra Carr y Peter Kim como codirectores de nuestra nueva Oficina de Equidad Racial y Justicia Social (ORESJ).

Tanto el Dr. Carr como el Sr. Kim tienen currículums impresionantes al liderar este trabajo. La Dra. Carr se desempeñó como directora de programas y directora senior de investigación con Girls Leadership, y fue directora de la escuela secundaria Holy Names de Oakland durante muchos años. El Sr. Kim se desempeñó como Director General del Centro Juvenil Asiático de East Bay y dirigió los esfuerzos de prevención de la violencia en la ciudad de Oakland durante muchos años.

Contra Costa es el primer condado en lanzar una Oficina de Equidad Racial y Justicia Social a través de un extenso proceso de participación comunitaria.
