Yom Ha'Shoah Yellow Candles at the J
|
|
In conjunction with the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Washington’s annual Yom Ha’Shoah Commemoration on May 1, the JCRC and Seaboard Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC) are offering Yom Ha’Shoah Yellow Candles to be lit on Erev Yom HaShoah, Wednesday, April 27, 2022. We light a yahrzeit Candle on the anniversary of a loved one’s death, but since many of the six million have no family to remember them, by lighting a candle we collectively remember those who perished. Candles will be available to JCC members and non-members at no charge in the Pozez JCC lobby beginning Monday, April 11. With the candles will be information on the virtual Commemoration on Sunday, May 1, and providing tzedakah to support the Jewish Social Service Agency Holocaust Survivors Fund.

NV Rides
By Emily Braley, NV Rides Manager
As you may have read in last week's edition of “What’s Nu,” NV Rides is proud to have received the first place award for Best Practices for Aging by the Virginia Commonwealth Council on Aging. The award, that honors programs and services that allow seniors to age in place, identifies innovative, community-based strategies to help seniors in their home communities. At NV Rides, this is our mission, so it was exciting to hear that others in our sphere noticed and acknowledged the important work we are doing.

CommUNITY: Please Help As You are Able
|
|
The Pozez JCC continues to support and build CommUNITY during this challenging time for so many people in our area. We hope you will join us in standing together to help those in need.
|
|
Waves of Afghan families who have been evacuated to our local community are in great need. We have the opportunity to fulfill the mitzvah (good deed) of welcoming the stranger by doing what we can to help the incoming refugees. The Pozez JCC is supporting the work of Lutheran Social Services National Capital Area (LSSNCA) to help the families get settled in our area. To that end, we are asking the community to donate gift cards that can be used by the refugees. Please bring your donations to the Guests Services Desk at the Pozez JCC where they will be collected and delivered to LSSNCA.
Here is a list of gift cards that are being collected in any amount:
Visa (unrestricted ones---meaning they are straight up cash)
Giant Food, Lyft, Target, Uber, Walmart
If you prefer to donate items, due to space constraints, these are the only items being collected:
- Gift cards (see above)
- Laptops – NEW only
- Smartphones – NEW or refurbished only
- SIM cards (Mint Mobile preferred)

|
The needs in our commUNITY are only increasing. That is why J Rides, a member of the NV Rides family, is currently expanding its service to provide help where it is needed most. In order to do this we need to enlist more volunteers to help with contactless food deliveries, check-in calls to isolated seniors and rides to critical medical care appointments.

FFO has also requested donations of cardboard boxes.
Each week during business hours, please bring non-perishable food and personal care items to the Guest Services Desk at the J's entrance to help us Jam the J-Trolley and donate these items to those in need in Fairfax County.
Suggested non-perishable foods include: Canned chicken, canned chili, canned fruit, rice, spaghetti sauces.
Suggested personal care items include: Toothpaste/Toothbrushes, deodorant and lotions, diapers & baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, adult incontinence underwear, laundry & dish detergent, household cleaners, paper towels & toilet paper.
