On Wednesday, PFI staff walked the neighborhood around our Ames, Iowa, office to pick up trash, tend our corner of town and perform an act of service to the planet in recognition of Earth Day on April 22.
First held in 1970, this day to honor and care for our planet is now recognized annually by many nations around the world. For our farmers, however, land stewardship is a daily practice.
The farmers in PFI's network are planting cover crops to protect soil and water; looking for ways to reduce nitrogen and chemical applications; integrating habitat for wildlife; asking thoughtful questions about their farming practices; exploring how to make their farms and communities more resilient – and more.
Finding ways to farm that support both people and the planet has always been part of Practical Farmers' ethos.
In our most recent strategic plan, effective through 2023, this value is expressed as part of our practical vision:
healthy environments stemming from responsible land stewardship. It's a vision we and our farmers are committed to every day.
