Equipping farmers to build resilient farms and communities.
Chris Henning, a landowner in Jefferson, Iowa, was awarded PFI's 2022 Farmland Legacy Award during a field day and award ceremony held on her farm last Friday, June 24.
Chris shared how she and her tenant have used cover crops, routine soil sampling and principles of precision agriculture to enhance productivity and soil health, limit chemical interventions and tillage on crop acres and identify opportunities to restore habitat.
Since the Gilbert family added a wetland to their farm, they've seen an abundance of wildlife and other plants return, like waterfowl and marsh marigolds.
On another part of the farm, the Gilberts raise about 18-20 acres of oats and other small grains for cover crops and feed. Adding more conservation practices like this creates habitat for wildlife like pheasants while helping to diversify their farm.
You will play a pivotal role in shaping our livestock programming that respond to the needs of PFI farmers as they implement new practices and seek markets.
Dan and Brian Voss will discuss cover crop practices and species they’ve used, lead guests on a tour of an oat cropand discuss management from variety selection to post-harvest. Guests will also see the Vosses’ equipment set-up for drilling oats.
