Equipping farmers to build resilient farms and communities.

Meet our two new AmeriCorps members -- Ryan Hansen and Lia Carrillo -- and help welcome them to Practical Farmers of Iowa. Both are joining PFI through Green Iowa AmeriCorps, and are serving terms that run from 2021-2022.

During his time with PFI, Ryan will primarily work with the communications team editing videos, generating podcast content and assisting with other marketing and promotional materials.

During her service term, Lia will mainly collaborate with PFI’s habitat and policy coordinator, Jorgen Rose.

We continue to crunch the numbers and it’s safe to say that grazing cover crops pencils out.

Practical Farmers has conducted on-farm economic research on this topic since 2015. Each unique situation resulted in positive net returns for the farmers.

In the third year of conducting summer cabbage variety trials, farmers Hannah Breckbill and Emily Fagan of Humble Hands Harvest and Kate Edwards of Wild Woods Farm compared yield and quality of four varieties: Farao, Tiara, Primo Vantage and Caraflex.

Over the summer, the PFI board and staff gathered to participate in a training entitled "Exploring PFI's Role in Shaping the Culture of Agriculture" led by long-time supporters and members Ricardo Salvador and Andrea Basche.

In this research report, Kellie and A.J. Blair aimed to fine-tune the nitrogen fertilization regime for their food-grade oat enterprise to maximize yield and profitability. They conducted strip trials to compare oat yield among strips receiving 25, 50 and 75 pounds of nitrogen per acre.

In this episode, we talk prairie strips with northeast Iowa farmer Dick Sloan. We talk about why Dick decided to plant prairie strips, what they are and what it takes to install and manage them.

Dick was just featured in a new video series from PFI: "Bringing Back the Edges: Creating Wildlife Habitat on Farms." You can watch the video on prairie strips here.
