Dear Friends,

This is a difficult time for all of us. In addition to the uncertainty, there is fear. At such a time, our decency and Jewish values are tested. To maintain goodness and consideration for others is the best indication of our characters and the best model for our children. Reacting unkindly to those who are sick is both unsympathetic and un-Jewish. No one chooses to contract a virus that is spreading around the globe; the accuser today may be the afflicted tomorrow. Let us all remember how important it is to band together, not to split apart. Take every precaution to be safe as the best medical advice suggests, but do not let vigilance erase compassion.

As Jews, we have faced difficult times throughout our history. What has sustained us is a belief in human resilience and Divine providence. As a Rabbi, a parent and someone who believes in this goodness of this community, I call upon all of us to enact the words of the prophet: to do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with God. Together, we will succeed in coming out of this crisis with a renewed spirit.

L’shalom –
Rabbi Wolpe
