Celebrating 100 years...

1924 - 2024

Notes from R.H. Heicke, Illinois State Evangelist, October 27, 1924

On Wednesday evening October 15th began the meeting with the new Seventh Street Christian Church of Decatur. This church was built in one day through the voluntary services of some seventy-five men, members of our First and Central Christians Churches of Decatur, as a part of their program in celebration of the Ninetieth Anniversary of the establishment of the Christian Church in Decatur. The same day it was erected, State Secretary Peters dedicated it.

This twenty-sixth day of September will become an important date in the history of our work in this city marking the birthday of this new church. The Sunday following the first Bible School session was conducted under the able leadership of C.K. Gillespie, Chairman of the Board of Elders of the Central Church. One hundred two persons attended the first session. On the following Sundays before the meeting began this number increased to 147. Brother R.R. Finlayson, former pastor at Brownstown, supplied the pulpit for three Sundays before the meeting opened and spoke to large and appreciative audiences. As a result of his labors twenty-nine members were received in the fellowship of the church. With these as a nucleus our meeting began with the hope of establishing a new and permanent organization.

The meeting is now less than two weeks old. Twenty-eight others have been added to the charter membership roll, fourteen by confession and baptism and the others by statement and letter. The audiences have filled the house at nearly every service while on last Sunday evening many were turned away for lack of even standing room. A fine spirit of optimism prevails among the folks of the community and the prospects are that our hope for a strong church will be a realization ere long.

Walking the Narrow Path:

Our Judgments

Jesus warns us that judging often returns to us.

Howard Thurman, a civil rights leader and spiritual mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr., shared an anecdote that captured this concept well. One day while he was at a university for a summer speaking event, one of the attendees complained that he couldn't sleep because his roommate snored terribly. The man came to Thurman's door irritated by his roommate's obnoxious volume. The man continued to make fun of the snoring, even suggesting that if the snorer's wife hadn't chided him, that must mean she can snore with the best of them too.

Thurman told the man that there was an extra bed in his room and he could sleep there. Gratefully, the man agreed to this offer. The complaining man went to sleep first, and Thurman settled down for an evening of reading. Thurman said that (you guessed it) soon after, "it began--the most pronounced and heavy snoring I had ever heard in my life."

Thurman had to leave the bedroom and sleep in another part of the suite. When the complaining man woke up and saw Thurman sound asleep, he responded, "Oh no! Don't tell me. I'll never blow my top again about snorers."

Thurman sums this story up by saying, "It is very easy to sit in judgment upon the behavior of others but often difficult to realize that every judgment is a self-judgment.... What I condemn in others may be but a reflection of myself in a mirror."

Share Your Faith by inviting 5 people to church this year

The God you worship is always revealed through your words and actions. Awkward conversations (i.e. "Are you saved?") are not necessary when your words and actions reveal the God you seek to learn, love, and serve.
