Celebrating 100 years...

1924 - 2024

Who was the first person baptized at Seventh Street Christian Church?

Our records indicate the first person baptized at Seventh Street Christian Church was Wayne Malcom, who resided at 2016 E Prairie, on November 9, 1924. Rev. Robert Findlayson was the officiant.

Other baptisms held that day were: Mrs. Leona Eaton, Margaret Harrington, Dorothy Riber, Fred Riber, and Mrs. Fred (Dora) Riber, Amos Wrightsman, John H. Wrightsman, and Nellie Wrightsman.

While other baptisms are listed before November 9, 1924, likely, the Seventh Street Christian Church baptismal was not installed or working. Those baptisms likely were held at either Central Christian or First Christian churches.

It is unclear when Wayne became an inactive member of the church. Elders did a recruitment campaign to reach out to inactive members in 1973 and a short interview was given with him, his wife, and children. There are no records of his wife and children joining.

Wayne passed away on July 4, 1989, and is buried at Union Cemetery in Oreana.

This 1947 photograph shows the Christian Youth Fellowship group seated in front of the baptismal curtain of the former Seventh Street Christian Church building.

Imagine a World with More...Community

Much of our culture is built around individualism; we value working hard and doing things for ourselves. The witness of scripture provides a counter-narrative, in which the good of the community is prioritized above the good of the individual. The early church imagined a world where God's limitless love shaped the way we gathered, care for one another and structured ourselves to share resources. How might imagining our current world the way the early church imagined God's world change our perspective? If we take the Acts 2:42-47 seriously, what does it mean about how we practice our faith?

Thanksgiving Special Offering Received November 17 & 24

The Thanksgiving Offering benefits the Colleges, Universities, Seminaries, and Divinity Houses affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Higher education has been an important focus for Disciples since the very beginning of the movement. Throughout our history, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning to educate students and form leaders to make a difference in the world. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education. Your gift to the Thanksgiving Offering helps support the education of thousands of students at our fifteen colleges and universities as well as our seven seminaries and divinity houses.

Share Your Faith by inviting 5 people to church this year

The God you worship is always revealed through your words and actions. Awkward conversations (i.e. "Are you saved?") are not necessary when your words and actions reveal the God you seek to learn, love, and serve.
