Celebrating 100 years...

1924 - 2024

Notes from R.H. Heicke, Illinois State Evangelist, November 27, 1924

October 27th to November 11th was occupied with the meeting at Seventh Street Church, Decatur. In previous reports we have given the genesis of this work under the direction of the Decatur Christian missionary Society. our meeting resulted in the establishment of a new church completely organized with on e hundred and fifteen members and with a Bible school enrollment of some three hundred which reached an attendance on the last Sunday of the meeting of two hundred and forty-four, completely filling all available space in the new church. Since the meeting the attendance for the two Sundays have been 216 and 220 indicating that the work was of a most permanent character. Also since the meeting there have bene ten more additions bringing the membership to 125.

Imagine a World with More...Compassion

Sheep & Goats. It is an apocalyptic eschatological parable (and if you are wondering about apocalyptic eschatological, it is how the present age ends and what is most important), the final instructions of Jesus before his death (more to come). The passage makes it clear that righteousness is inextricably tied with how we treat each other - so much so that caring for a neighbor in need is caring for Jesus himself. If we take this passage seriously, what does it mean about how we practice our faith?

Thanksgiving Special Offering Received November 17 & 24

The Thanksgiving Offering benefits the Colleges, Universities, Seminaries, and Divinity Houses affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Higher education has been an important focus for Disciples since the very beginning of the movement. Throughout our history, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning to educate students and form leaders to make a difference in the world. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education. Your gift to the Thanksgiving Offering helps support the education of thousands of students at our fifteen colleges and universities as well as our seven seminaries and divinity houses.

Share Your Faith by inviting 5 people to church this year

The God you worship is always revealed through your words and actions. Awkward conversations (i.e. "Are you saved?") are not necessary when your words and actions reveal the God you seek to learn, love, and serve.

Our Emerging Future

On October 18 and 19, 2024, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Michigan Region and The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in IL/ WI, met for individual business meetings and shared worship. The business of the Assemblies included consideration of the question of merging the two regions. The question received overwhelming approval and the Disciples in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin were charged at the end of worship to go and begin a year of worshipful work as we emerge as new regional entity.

The Disciples Women Visioning Committee will be meeting on November 1 and 2 to begin our worshipful work. An initial vision team will meet at United Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Country Club Hills to consider a shared ministry agenda for 2025 and to begin to discuss a structure for the Disciples Women in the emerging region. Members of the Visioning Team include Michigan: Marybeth McCormick, Rev. Brenda Etheridge, Angela David, Barbara Dykhuizen, Diana Payton, Nora Shumake, and IL/ WI Ginger Harris, Daphne Hayes, Jacqueline Myers, and Rev. Dr. Beth Rupe.

Sending Forth from Regional Assembly Worship

And now, as people woven together by mutual promises

to work toward becoming one region,

we leave this space to do the work that we have been called to do.

We leave opening our hearts and minds to discern the will of God

as we are led by the Spirit

to emerge as a new creation called and blessed by God.

We leave this space committing ourselves

to embody the good news of Jesus Christ

             as we work for justice,

as we care for the poor, the weak, the marginalized,

as we seek to dismantle systems of injustice and oppression,

and as we construct systems of radical equity, inclusion

                  and welcome.

And now, we go as disciples to make disciples

in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and beyond.

We will work with diligence,

and we will look with hope until we are together again.
