What's New

Carman is Retiring!

After 20 years of excellent service, Carman is taking her well-deserved retirement. We are sad to see her go, but incredibly grateful for all of the wonderful years she has spent with us!

That said, we will post a job opportunity on our website soon.

Closed for Memorial Day

The Prairie Rivers of Iowa office will be closed on May 25th in observance of Memorial Day

Call for Volunteers!

Rummage RAMPage is happening soon! This is an annual event hosted by the City of Ames in partnership with Iowa State University Office of Sustainability. This community-wide garage sale is designed to keep reusable items out of landfills. Non-profit organizations send volunteers to help run the sale and share in any profits. The sale runs from July 24th to August 1st this year. There are several job categories volunteers can participate in.

If you are interested in volunteering on behalf of Prairie Rivers of Iowa, please sign up with Kristine by May 14th. Include the job category you are interested in and the dates and times you would like to volunteer.

Pollinator of the Month

White-Lined Sphinx Hyles lineata

By Katelyn Rinicker, Pollinator Conservation Specialist

The White-Lined Sphinx Moth is commonly found in urban settings such as parks and gardens. While they are nocturnal, they can be seen at dusk and dawn and occasionally during the day. With their large bodies and flying patterns, they are often mistaken for hummingbirds, especially when they are using their long proboscis to drink nectar. Their wingspan is roughly 2-3 inches, and their hindwings are pink with dark borders. They have a wide variety of host plants, including evening primrose (Oenothera spp.), which is available in our native seed bank!

Frequent Fliers: Birds on the Move

by Kristine Micheletti, Executive Director

This is perhaps my favorite time of year! Flowers are blooming. Trees are getting their leaves back. The weather is getting nicer. Animals are emerging. And one of my favorite things…the birds are back! I absolutely love waking up in the morning to the birds chirping.
