High School Holds On-Campus Spiritual Retreat
|
|
Prince Avenue Christian School high school students recently enjoyed a two-day on-campus spiritual retreat in which they had special Chapel services and took time to focus on this year’s Spiritual Life theme, “Thrive”. Guest speaker Macon Jones spoke from John 10 and encouraged students that the good and abundant life is found in following Jesus and never apart from him. Students were lead in worship by Chandler Moore and Enrique Holmes of Maverick City Music. The band encouraged students to block out distractions, focus on Jesus, and worship freely.
The Spiritual Retreat is a special time for students to step away from the rigor of academic demands and to focus on growing in Christ and building community as a school. During free-time, students enjoyed coffee from Java Joy, paintball on the cross-country course, an Instagram Challenge (#pacsthrivechallenge), and time spent with classmates and teachers.

Prince Runner Shows Compassion During Race
|
|
As a Varsity Cross Country competitor, Prince Avenue Christian School senior Lizzy Coleman is accustomed to pushing hard and passing as many runners as she can in the final stretch of a race. So when Lizzy, who was on pace for a personal record and to place in the top ten, abruptly stopped in the last 15 meters of the meet, coaches and parents took notice.
Lizzy explains, “I saw a girl two people in front of me collapse. I ran over to her and saw her curled up on the ground. I knew right away she was not going to get up and finish on her own.”
Spectators watching the scene unfold at the state’s biggest invitational meet observed Lizzy help the other runner to her feet, hook their arms together, and encourage the hurting girl across the finishing line. “She had made it that far and deserved to finish like everyone else. She got to cross the finish line, and the medical assistants were able to take her from me to take care of her.”
When asked whether or not her own status in the race was a concern to her in that moment, Lizzy says her thought process did not include the competition. “This girl that I had never met before and will probably never see again was hurting and needed help. I just knew I had to help her. I have experienced the love of Christ, and helping her is what Jesus would want me to do.”
Those watching had the privilege to observe a dramatic shift from competitive showmanship to compassionate sportsmanship. Lizzy hopes that her choice that day will encourage others in a lesson she has learned from Varsity Cross Country Coach Michael Palmer. “Coach Palmer has influenced me greatly. He has taught me that being a Christ-like leader is more important than being the best athlete. We have so many chances to show God’s love on and off the course or field. Character matters the most. There is always someone looking up to you. Show them how to play while demonstrating God’s love.”
Coach Palmer describes the moment as one of the most memorable in his coaching career. “The number of people that were touched by watching Lizzy help this runner was remarkable. Lots of fast runners in Helen, Georgia that day, but only one of them stopped to literally be the hands and feet of Jesus for another person in need.”

Meg Chandler Recipient of
The Megan Twist Memorial Scholarship
|
|
Prince Avenue Christian School 2020 graduate Meg Chandler has been selected as the 2020 recipient of The Megan Twist Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established to remember and honor the life of Megan Twist, a 2011 PACS graduate and winner of numerous academic and extra-curricular awards. Megan graduated from Georgia Southern University and made the Dean’s List several times, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and public relations. Megan was a compassionate friend always portraying strength for others, choosing to lift them up during their trials and encouraging them with love and laughter. Megan’s life was a testimony of bringing happiness and joy into every life she touched.
The PACS faculty submitted nominees, and senior Meg Chandler emerged as the one nominee that was most reflective of Megan’s heart for people and family. Meg Chandler is described by her nominating teachers as an exceptional young lady who is full of laughter and joy with an enthusiasm and openness that brightens the classroom. “Meg is always surrounded by friends and goes out of her way to help others. In addition, Meg is a hard-working choosing rigorous and demanding classes. She does not give up when faced with difficulty.”
While at Prince Avenue, Meg played Varsity Soccer and was in the National Honors Society, Beta Club, and the National Art Honors Society. She plans to attend the University of Georgia and major in psychology.
It is the hope of The Megan Twist Memorial Scholarship committee that this yearly $10,000 college scholarship will bring glory to Christ and encourage others to love more intentionally as God has shown his love. The founding donors of this memorial gift wish to remain anonymous.
