Prayer of the Day

O God, we acknowledge the many things on our minds and the concerns we carry with us. As we pray, free us from the grip of busyness and worry; help us to put any anxieties or worries into your hands. Enable us to be open to the healing and humor and service to Jesus Christ that awaits us this week. May our life reflect the love of the Trinity by which you bless this world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

-Chris Currie, May 18, 2025

Please note that the church office will close this Friday, May 23, at 1 p.m.

and will be closed Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day.

Larry Wyatt Reunion Concert Sunday at SCAPC

The Loyola University Chorale alums from the school's 'Wyatt years' will present a free concert in the Sanctuary this Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m. In addition to the chorale, the concert will include soloists from those years and a performance by Fr. Sean Duggan on piano playing Bach’s "Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue." Fr. Sean is two-time winner of the International Bach Competition and has performed all over the world. Dr. Wyatt was Director of Music at SCAPC from 1975-85.

Living Buddha, Living Christ

Church member Dr. Bill Troutt will lead a discussion on the book Living Buddha, Living Christ by Thich Naht Hanh tomorrow morning at 10:00 in the Land Building Lakeside Room. We will dive into Buddhist teachings and how they might sound quite similar to the teachings of Christ! All are welcome and you don't need to have read the book to participate.

Sunday School

Please note that Sunday School will not meet this coming Sunday, May 25. A Summer Sunday School class for adults will begin on June 1 at 8:30 a.m., before the 9:30 a.m. worship service. The class will be based on the book Elusive Grace: Loving Your Enemies While Striving for God's Justice by Scott Black Johnston. For recordings of last Sunday's Gospel of John class, visit scapc.org/sunday-school.

During the 9:30 service on Summer Sundays (beginning June 1), children 1st grade and under will meet for "Summer Bible Adventures" in the Learning Center on the 2nd floor.

SCAPC 101

Our next SCAPC 101 will be held on Sunday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m. (following 9:30 worship) in the Phifer Library. This class is designed as an orientation for new members and visitors interested in joining our church...or anyone wishing to learn more about SCAPC! We will talk about our basic beliefs as Presbyterians, the history of SCAPC, and how you can get involved in its ministries. Learn more in the meantime by visiting our membership page.

Columbarium Changes

The columbarium launched in 2012 and still operates with the original pricing structure. In recent years, SCAPC’s property insurance cost has tripled; the cost of both urns and engraving have increased over 30%; and maintenance and administrative expenses are much higher than they were in 2012. Given this reality, the Session just approved a proposal to increase existing prices and fees. The new costs will be $3,000.00 for a double niche and $2,000.00 for a single niche. The inurnment fee will be $750.00. We will also offer TWO SINGLE NICHES for the price of a double ($3,000.00 for two single niches). These increases will take effect June 1, 2025.  To purchase a niche before the price increase, please contact Pierce Young (pierce@scapc.org) by May 30.

Congratulations, Betsy!

Our congratulations are extended to church member Betsy Nalty who was the recipient of the Times-Picayune Loving Cup award. The program read, "Wise, humble, forward-thinking, the epitome of grace--these are some of the ways civic leaders describe Betsy, praising the contributions that the fifth-generation New Orleanian has made to the city and state." SCAPC's Chris Currie led the invocation at her presentation last week.

INVOCATION:

"O Lord our God, your prophets urged your ancient people to seek the welfare of the cities in which they lived. As we gather, we give you thanks for the Times-Picayune Loving Cup and the way it honors those who have given their lives and time and love to seek the welfare of this city. We thank you for all the recipients of this recognition over the years and celebrate their common bond to seek the betterment of New Orleans and to ensure it continues to thrive as a community full of purpose and joy and creativity and celebration and hope. We thank you in particular for this year’s recipient and the ways she embodies the values of this recognition. We thank you in particular for her leadership in education in our city and throughout the state, and we give you thanks that her hard work and dedication to these endeavors are being honored here today. May her example and the many others who have been honored with this recognition inspire future leaders to plunge themselves into efforts that impact this community for the common good, so that the beloved community for which you have created us may be realized, enjoyed, and experienced for all who live here, here and now; we pray for this in your holy name, Amen."

Other SCAPC member Loving Cup recipients have included A.B. Freeman (1955), Clifford F. Favrot (1956), Darwin S. Fenner (1965), Richard West Freeman (1977), C. Allen Favrot (2002), Ruthie Frierson (2006), and Bob Merrick (2019), as well as Darryl Berger, husband of Louellen Berger (2024).
