Dear Ones,

I pray for your peace today. It can feel hard to find right now.

The deaths of over 160 girls age 7-12 in a bombing attributed to the United States & Israel weighs heavily on my heart.

The revoking of state-issued identification from transgender people in Kansas weighs heavily on my heart.

The invoking of Christianity as justification for the attacks in the middle east weighs heavily on my heart.

How do we pray when the world feels so heavy?

The gift of our heritage is that we are not the first (and sadly, won't be the last) to suffer and need hope in times of trial. So we have tools to use when our own words fail us.

I point you to the Psalms first and foremost. The Psalms can be found at the back of the Book of Common Prayer and in your Bible and they are the gold standard of expressing what living life with all it's anguish and glory is about.

Psalms began in the oral tradition well before our Scriptures were recorded. They came out of the lived experiences by individuals and communities and eventually, were written down. They rage, they bless, they lament, they celebrate, they curse, they hope...and they do it all in, and to, and through God. They are a powerful reminder that we need not only bring our tidiest self to God. Rather, we bring our whole selves: heart, mind, and spirit, broken and bruised, to God. We trust that God willingly receives all that we are, and will not leave us to suffer alone. If you need to borrow words in troubled times for your prayers from people who clearly know what it is and was to experience the best and the most egregious of life, the Psalms are your best friend.

Additionally, the Book of Common Prayer also has Prayers and Thanskgivings for a whole host of needs starting on page 810. There are dozens of prayers there which express so much of what is often on our hearts.

Prayer alone does not solve the pains of the world. We must partner it with action to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves as we have been commanded to do. But the act of praying renews and grounds us. It reminds us of who we are and who we belong to. It gives us our purpose again. It restores hope. So I close today with one of my favorites on p 832 of the BCP which strengthens me when times are hardest:

A Prayer of Self-Dedication

Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee; and then use us, we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people - may it be so.

¿Cómo rezamos cuando el mundo se siente tan pesado?

El regalo de nuestra herencia es que no somos los primeros (y, lamentablemente, no seremos los últimos) en sufrir y necesitar esperanza en tiempos de prueba. Por eso tenemos herramientas que podemos utilizar cuando nuestras propias palabras nos fallan.

En primer lugar, les recomiendo los Salmos. Los Salmos se encuentran al final del Libro de Oración Común y en su Biblia, y son el estándar de oro para expresar lo que significa vivir la vida con toda su angustia y gloria.

Los Salmos comenzaron en la tradición oral mucho antes de que se registraran nuestras Escrituras. Surgieron de las experiencias vividas por individuos y comunidades y, finalmente, se escribieron. Se enfurecen, bendicen, lamentan, celebran, maldicen, esperan... y lo hacen todo en Dios, para Dios y a través de Dios. Son un poderoso recordatorio de que no solo debemos presentar ante Dios nuestra mejor versión. Más bien, le llevamos todo nuestro ser: corazón, mente y espíritu, quebrantados y magullados. Confiamos en que Dios recibe de buen grado todo lo que somos y no nos dejará sufrir solos. Si en momentos difíciles necesitas tomar prestadas palabras para tus oraciones de personas que saben claramente lo que es y lo que fue experimentar lo mejor y lo más atroz de la vida, los Salmos son tu mejor amigo.

Además, el Libro de Oración Común también contiene oraciones y acciones de gracias para toda una serie de necesidades a partir de la página 700. Hay docenas de oraciones que expresan gran parte de lo que a menudo sentimos en nuestro corazón.

La oración por sí sola no resuelve los males del mundo. Debemos acompañarla de acciones para amar a Dios y amar a nuestro prójimo como a nosotros mismos, tal y como se nos ha mandado. Pero el acto de orar nos renueva y nos da estabilidad. Nos recuerda quiénes somos y a quién pertenecemos. Nos devuelve nuestro propósito. Nos devuelve la esperanza. Así que termino hoy con una de mis favoritas, en la página 724 del Libro de Oración Común, que me da fuerzas en los momentos más difíciles:

Acto de dedicación personal

Dios todopoderoso y eterno, de tal modo atrae nuestro corazón hacia ti, dirige nuestra mente, inspira nuestra imaginación y gobierna nuestra voluntad, que seamos totalmente tuyos, dedicados por completo a ti. Te rogamos nos uses según tu voluntad, y siempre para tu gloria y el bienestar de tu pueblo; por Jesucristo nuestro Señor y Salvador. Amén.

Siempre para tu gloria y el bienestar de tu pueblo, que así sea.
