Lent Week 3 Prayer Practice: Art as Prayer

by Sarah Chancellor-Watson

PRAYING WITH ART

This week’s prayer is not based on words, but on this image of Rembrandt’s Return of the Prodigal Son. Using the practice of Visio Divina, you will use this work of art to guide your prayer. There are no hard and fast rules here and this practice may take you up to 30 minutes to complete, but it may take just a few minutes. You are free to move at your own pace.

Visio Divina Steps:

  1. Get into a relaxing position and take a few deep breaths to center your mind.
  2. Take in the image – first as a whole and then begin to notice certain details that stick out to you or catch your attention.
  3. Focus on one detail or aspect of the image. Invite God to speak to you through what you’ve noticed and spend some time listening.
  4. Pay attention to the thoughts, the feelings, the memories, the questions that come up as you continue to contemplate this one single aspect of the image.
  5. Take some time to respond in prayer to whatever this image evokes for you – gratitude, lamentation, supplication, wonder, admiration, confession, praise, etc.
  6. Bring your prayer to a close by resting in God’s grace and love.

A Good Week to Try Out the 8:30 Service!

It's been a busy two days in the Sanctuary! Yesterday a huge shipment of parts for our new organ arrived, and over 30 volunteers gathered to unload them. Due to this, we will be holding both worship services this Sunday in Frampton Fellowship Hall. To help create space for everyone, we encourage you to try out the 8:30 service! Communion will be served and the service will last about 45 minutes.

Tree Planting with SOUL Saturday

Join us for a morning of planting with SOUL (Sustaining Our Urban Landscape)! All volunteers age 16+ are welcome. We'll be meeting this Saturday, March 22 from 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the Hollygrove neighborhood with specific location instructions to come. The work will involve using shovels and pick-axes to plant trees in 15-30 gallon pots, so volunteers should expect some strenuous activity. If you have physical limitations but still want to sign up, you can help greet volunteers at the check-in table at base camp. Sign up on our YAF webpage or on the SCAPC app. TOMORROW is the deadline to sign up.

POLO (Parents of Little Ones) Party Sunday

Calling all POLO’s! We are hosting an afternoon play date for families with little ones ages 3 and under this Sunday, March 23 from 4-5:30 p.m. on the Land Building lawn. We will have bubbles, chalk, and snacks for children and grown-ups! Bring a lawn chair and a blanket and join us for fellowship and play time. Big siblings are welcome and older Baptism Buddies are encouraged to reach out to their younger buddies to meet up and play together at the event. Please RSVP to tyler@scapc.org. We will be doing a diaper drive for the Junior League Diaper Bank. Diapers of any size (infant-adult) are welcome, and both open and unopened packages are accepted.

Mystery & Mysterium:

Lupberger Lecturers & Guest Preacher

On Sunday, March 30, we will be joined by Madeline Lindvall Radman and Michael Lindvall, authors of the Ludington-van der Berg mystery book series, as our 2025 Lupberger Lecturers. Our schedule will be:

  • 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. - Michael to guest preach
  • 9:30 a.m. - Unified Adult Sunday School Class led by Madeline & Michael, Frampton Fellowship Hall
  • 11:30 a.m. - Question & Answer Session, Book Signing Reception, Land Building

Learn more about their program on our Lupberger Lecture page. The Lupberger Lecture series was established by a generous gift from SCAPC members Ed and Donna Lupberger. Copies of the M.M. Lindvall books will be available for sale at church this Sunday.

STAIR 1990's Photo ID'ing

Were you a part of the STAIR (Start the Adventure in Reading) program from 1990-2000? We could use your memory to help us identify folks in our scrapbooks as we prepare for our 40th Anniversary. On Friday, April 4 from 10 a.m.-noon, swing by the Land Building Riverside Room for coffee, cookies, and a trip down memory lane. Please let STAIR Director Jennie Boudreaux know you’re coming by emailing jennie@stairnola.org.

Sign-ups begin TODAY for our Spring Day of Service. Projects for ALL AGES include gardening, sorting and organizing materials, bracelet making, and moving heavy furniture for our Community Ministry partners. We will meet in Frampton Fellowship Hall at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and proceed to various volunteer sites from there. Please visit our sign-up table outside of Frampton Fellowship Hall this Sunday for more information or go to our sign-up link on the Community Ministry webpage. For additional questions please email Pastor Sarah.

YAF Crawfish Boil

The YAF (Young Adults & Families) crawfish boil will take place Saturday, April 5 from 12-2 p.m. on the Land Building lawn! Sign up on our YAF webpage or on the SCAPC app no later than Friday, March 28, and contact Tyler Wheeler with any questions.

Adult Sunday School Classes

9:30 a.m. | Details on Sunday School page

FAITH AND LITERATURE

March 9-30 | Land Building Riverside Room

This week's topic is “Faith and Media: How a Christian Should Read the News” with Betsy Fischer Martin, Executive Director, Women and Politics Institute and Executive in Residence for Government at American University, Washington, D.C. Betsy is a native Louisianian and recently joined SCAPC. For the recording of last Sunday's class, visit the Sunday School webpage.

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

February 16 - May 18 | Chapel

In its tone, structure, and portrayal of Jesus, the Gospel of John differs greatly from the other three gospels. John’s story of Jesus is theologically complex, interweaving themes of light and darkness. This Sunday's topic will be "Jesus Himself as Sign", led by Pat Widhalm. For the recording of last Sunday's class, visit the Sunday School webpage.

THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE INSTITUTION: A CREATIVE WORKSHOP OF FAITH AND BELONGING

January 12-March 23 | Led by Ashley Brown and Tyler Wheeler

2nd Floor Conference Room

In this interactive class, we invite you to explore your personal faith beliefs while understanding how they align with the broader Presbyterian Church (USA). Our topic this Sunday will be "Celebrations of Authentic Faith" led by Ashley Brown and Tyler Wheeler.

Food Shipment Arrived in Cuba

We are happy to share that a large shipping container of food, including red beans, black beans, cooking oil, rice, pasta, tuna, coffee, and powdered milk, was delivered last month to our sister Presbyterian churches in Cuba. Made possible by a partnership of many, the container was loaded at the Port of New Orleans and SCAPC member Laura St Clair served as the purchasing agent.

Betsy Nalty Receives Loving Cup Award

We are thrilled to announce that SCAPC member Betsy Nalty was selected to receive the Times-Picayune’s Loving Cup Award. This award honors civic activity in the previous year and has been given since 1901 to men and women who have worked unselfishly for the community without expectation of public recognition or material reward.

In Monday’s issue, the Times-Picayune stated of Betsy, “the fifth generation New Orleanian has a decades-long resumé of community service that would be hard to match” and that her volunteer service covers more than 50 roles in civic affairs. She defines her ambition now as “being in a position to give a lot of love to a lot of people. Because love is the underlying thing in my DNA.”

Liberty's Kitchen Hosts Sue Zemanick of Zasu

Widely renowned Chef and TV personality Sue Zemanick, owner of Zasu, will cook for Liberty's Kitchen's Guest Chef Night on Wednesday, March 26! Learn more and make your reservation at libertyskitchen.org. Liberty's Kitchen is one of SCAPC's 20 community ministry partners.
