    P reaching for Elders

by The Rev. Jeanne Gay, Interim
         Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church

Does your church expect its elders to be able to preach? Or, are you an elder who feels a call to preach?

Learn just what it takes to prepare and preach a sermon in a workshop entitled " Preaching for Elders" --  one of eight learning opportunities offered  as part of the Susquehanna Parish Ministry Group's 2018 Fall Discipleship Event: "Worship and Music". The event will be held 9am to 1pm on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the First Presbyterian Church of Bel Air.

The Susquehanna Parish MG is delighted to invite its leaders and members of its 11 churches, as well as those from other churches in the Presbytery of Baltimore to attend this event, which is focused on congregational and spiritual leader development. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 5; contact Rev. Stephen Melton to register

The workshop on Preaching for Elders will be led by the Rev. Jeanne Gay, Interim Pastor at Good Shepherd
    Rev. Jeanne Gay
Presbyterian Church in Joppa, MD. This four hour workshop is designed to prepare church leaders to preach in their own or other churches. Some of the subjects covered will include exegetical vs. testimonial preaching; the purposes of preaching; and, structuring and presenting the sermon.

The workshop will also include individual and group exercises and whole-group discussion. A panel of preachers will offer best practices in preaching and helpful tips. Those participating in this workshop will gain a set of tools for creating and preaching sermons.   If you're interested in participating, you need to do two things right away:
    1. Register for the event by contacting either Stephen Melton ([email protected] or 410-734-7344) or Jeanne Gay ([email protected] or 419-707-1562).
    2. Order a copy of the book to be used: A Sermon Workbook: Exercises in the Art and Craft of Preaching(Thomas H. Troeger and Leonora Tubbs Tisdale, Abingdon Press, 2013).
Once registered, participants will receive a description of the pre-work for the workshop, both reading and exegesis. Advanced preparation for this workshop is highly recommended and will result in a more rewarding experience for its participants.
