Honoring Herstory

For Women’s History Month, Commissioner Garcia wanted to remember the enduring legacies of local women leaders who are no longer with us. The “Honoring HerStory” campaign highlights a musician who broke barriers, a law enforcement officer who inspired other women through her zest for life, and a former councilwoman, and humanitarian whose leadership paved the way for progress.

Thank you to the women who helped us commemorate these incredible local icons who left a mark in our communities, region, and hearts.

Spring Break camps in Precinct 2

We welcomed Spring with two camps for the youngest adventurers in Precinct 2! Our Kids2Gether and Outdoor Adventure campers enjoyed a week of exploring, learning, and making memories with friends. Additionally, our Outdoor Adventure Campers went on special missions at our parks with our new app, Agents of Discovery!

Precinct 2 recently launched Agents of Discovery, an augmented reality game designed to make learning fun, active, and engaging through self-guided challenges in the real world. Best of all, Agents of Discovery is free and accessible on both the Apple and Google Play store!

The game is available at five Precinct 2 parks: Challenger 7 Memorial, Bay Area, Clear Lake, David G. Burnet, and James Driver Inclusive parks. Keep an eye out for additional parks coming soon!

Café with Commissioner

This month, Commissioner Garcia and the Precinct 2 team chatted with the Baytown residents over a cup of coffee!

Residents shared their concerns, exchanged new ideas, and connected with Precinct 2's community relations team and had the opportunity to chat one-on-one with Commissioner Garcia. We're thankful for this opportunity to connect with residents and listen to their concerns. Together, we are making Precinct 2 a great place to live, learn, and play for all! Stay tuned for the next Cafe with Commissioner event!

23 women receive their certification

thanks to Train2Empower

This month, we congratulated 23 Train2Empower participants who reached a new milestone in their careers! All of the participants in this group happened to be women, with many being mothers, making this particularly noteworthy as we celebrate Women’s History Month. Train2Empower, a program of Precinct 2’s Workforce Development Division, offers free credentials classes for in-demand skills in various industries. In this group, participants took classes to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA).

Revive2Thrive: Infrastructure project updates

This month, we celebrated the completion of two infrastructure projects and broke ground on a new project!

Quitman Street Project:

We're ready to kick off the Quitman Street Project with our Northside community to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists from Houston Avenue to Elysian Street! The project will include upgraded sidewalks, lighting, trees, paving, redesigned intersections, bus stops, and a bike lane, aiming to enhance the area's cultural fabric and quality of life. Construction starts this summer.

Aldine Mail Route Road and Sidewalk Improvement Project:

This month, we celebrated the completion of the reconstruction of a portion of Aldine Mail Route. This section of Aldine Mail Route from Slater Lane to Aldine Westfield Road was part of the High Injury Network because of the prevalence of fatal and serious accidents in the area. The improvements include the expansion of a two-lane to five-lane road, new sidewalks, and drainage upgrades to provide a safer commute for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

High Meadows and Fairgreen Subdivision Drainage Improvement Project:

We’re excited to announce the completion of the $3.4 million High Meadows and Fairgreen Subdivision Drainage Improvement Project. This project includes new storm sewer pipes and inlets, additional drainage systems, an extra outfall, and the replacement of half of the roadway and associated driveway.

In the last month, Commissioner Garcia led or voted in favor of the following items:

Tax exemptions for childcare facilities:

Commissioners Court unanimously approved a full exemption of property taxes for certain childcare facilities. Childcare expenses rank as the second-largest financial burden for families after housing costs. This measure aims to help reduce operating costs for childcare organizations which should also reduce the financial strain on families seeking quality childcare services.

Reappointment of Fire Marshal:

Chief Laurie Christensen has been unanimously reappointed as the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office (FMO). In addition, FMO was recently recognized as the first Fire Marshal’s Office in the State of Texas to be recognized as an “Accredited Law Enforcement Agency."

Castlewood drainage improvements:

Commissioners Court approved the negotiation with an engineering firm for the design of the Castlewood Subdivision drainage improvements. This project includes drainage analysis, design of curbs, gutter streets, sidewalks, and curb ramps at the street intersections.

Hardy Downtown Connector Study Report:

HCTRA’s Visioning Hardy Downtown Connector Study Report was accepted and approved in this week’s Commissioners Court. The visioning study began in November 2022 and examines the relationship between the Hardy Downtown Connector and the community.

With approval of the report, HCTRA is now authorized to move forward with implementation of the Hardy Downtown Connector project.

New buses for senior trips: A request to purchase new buses for Precinct 2 was approved in Commissioners Court. The purchase of the buses will allow Precinct 2 to transport residents to events, field trips, and help seniors and youth who lack reliable transportation.

Resolutions

Charlie Newsom's retirement: Commissioner Garcia passed a resolution to recognize Charlie Newsom for his retirement after serving Precinct 2 for more than 41 years. Most recently, he has been the Superintendent of Precinct 2's Fleet Services Department. Newsom is looking forward to spending more time with his family and duck hunting. We wish him the best and thank him for his decades of public service!

Recognizing Gloria Glover: Glover has dedicated her legal career to advocating for children and families in Texas. For the past four years, she served the Harris County Attorney's Office as Senior Assistant County Attorney in the Children’s Protective Services Division. Soon, she will continue her service to Harris County as an Associate Judge for the 312th District Court.
