Honoring our Heroes

Every day, Precinct 2 Veterans Services Department works to ensure veterans and their families feel welcomed, cared for, and appreciated.

In this Tour of Progress, we highlight how Precinct 2 has expanded its services and programs for veterans through the help of partner organizations since 2019.

From becoming the first and only Nationally Accredited Veterans Service Office in Harris County to partnering with Operation Yellowbird, Commissioner Garcia and the entire Precinct 2 family feel honored to be able to serve our heroes.

Remembering Josue Flores

On November 5, Precinct 2 celebrated a project that is very near and dear to Commissioner Adrian Garcia’s heart and the Northside community. Commissioner was honored to dedicate a new pocket park named after Josue Flores. Flores was tragically killed in the Near Northside area in 2016 while walking home from school. He was only 11 years old.

Through the Josue Flores Memorial Park, his memory lives on. The park, across from the Leonel Castillo Community Center, includes STEM elements in honor of Josue’s love for science. A special thank you to the Flores Family, his best friend Angel Nario, and all who joined!

This month, Commissioner Garcia led or voted in favor of the following items:

  • Electric Vehicles for Sheriff's Office: Approval of $2.5 million for electric vehicles and electric vehicle equipment for the Harris County Sheriff's Office and Universal Services. The goal is to test EV technology for the county fleet and to evaluate how to expand the use of electric vehicles in Harris County.
  • Support for Harris Health: Approval to allocate $45,000,000 in ARPA State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to the Harris Health Hospital District to support essential health services for Harris County residents.
  • Paid Mental Health Leave: This additional American Rescue Plan funding aims to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic on behavioral health for youth, families, and individuals affected by substance use while strengthening the behavioral health workforce.
  • Resolution recognizing November as National Diabetes Month.
