Investing in education

for a brighter future

In 2019, Commissioner Garcia launched an SAT Prep program. It was one of his first projects when he took office. Since then, Precinct 2 community centers are home to two STEM academics and dozens of programs for school-age children.

Join Commissioner Garcia on this Tour of Progress on education with a slight detour out of Precinct 2 for a special, sentimental reason!

Knowledge is power

Harris County launches SAFE Harris to provide a transparent and informational insight to the collaborative work and multi-million dollar investments being implemented to enhance public safety in Harris County. Earlier this year, Precinct 2 launched our own public safety page with information on investments in cops, courts, and community supported or led by Commissioner Garcia.

Commissioner named a Rising LoneStar

Commissioner Adrian Garcia was recognized as one of the Top Ten Texas Local Officials by Rising LoneStars for July 2022!

The list highlights local government officials who showed extraordinary leadership in the month of July. Commissioner Garcia's leadership on Employ2Empower was in the spotlight. The program connects homeless individuals with employment opportunities and resources. A year ago, it began as a pilot program in Precinct 2. It is now expanding countywide!

Thank you Rising LoneStars for the recognition!

Revive2Thrive: Infrastructure projects

This month, Precinct 2 broke ground on an $8.9 million dollar drainage improvement project in the Western Homes Subdivision.

It includes ditch upgrades and the construction of underground storm sewer improvements. We want to thank the Harris County Engineering Department, Harris County Flood Control District, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for partnering with us to revitalize our communities!

Caleb Harris,

Step-Up Intern, Summer 2022

Caleb is a senior at Texas State University majoring in Public Relations and graduating in the Spring of 2023. He graduated from Goose Creek Memorial High School in Baytown, TX. Outside of school and work, Caleb enjoys watching and debating sports. He is a fan of the Denver Broncos, Houston Rockets, and the Houston Astros.

Q: During your internship, in what Precinct 2 departments or divisions did you work, and what did you do?

A: I spent most of my internship working in the Community Center Division, more specifically in the Call Center. At the Call Center, I did tasks such as creating and scheduling Precinct 2 events and activities in our online registration/reservations system CivicRec. We attended and helped execute events such as hotspot giveaways, ballroom dance socials, and pet food drives. "The accusation they make is against a policy that the state itself implements. It’s hypocrisy. While Greg Abbott and his friends in Austin are playing political games, we are governing working and solving real problems for Harris County.”

This month, Commissioner Garcia led or voted in favor of the following items:

  • Bonds on the ballot: Commissioners Court passed, on a 3-2 vote, Commissioner Garcia’s motion to draft language to place road and drainage, parks, and public safety bonds on the ballot for this November. The bonds will total $1.2 billion, an amount selected because it will not result in new taxes for homeowners over the life of the bond.
  • Violent Crime Reduction Initiative: Commissioner Garcia moved to approve $575,000 in additional funding for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Reduction Initiative, allowing investigators to work additional overtime targeting the most violent and serious offenders in the county.
  • Monkeypox vaccines: Commissioner Garcia successfully passed a motion to make additional monkeypox vaccines available for communities at the highest risk of contracting the virus.
  • Helping victims of trauma: Commissioners Court approved Commissioner Garcia's request for $75,000 for services at the UT Trauma and Resilience Center for victims of domestic/family violence and first responders.
  • American Rescue Plan Act funds:
  • $29.5M in ARPA funds for Community-wide COVID-19 Housing Program (CCHP) – vouchers for housing, monitoring, management, mental health & substance treatment
  • $14M ARPA funds for behavioral health, youth and families, and substance abuse counseling

Resolutions

  • Aug 3: Recognition of Rafael Palafox for his more than 25-year career with NALEO. During his time with NALEO, Ralph devoted his time assisting our community with the naturalization process and our get-out-the-vote efforts.  Commissioner Garcia commends Ralph and wishes him the best in his much-deserved retirement.

  • Aug 23: Support of federal law enforcement in the wake of threats against the FBI

Thank you, Precinct 1!

Commissioner Rodney Ellis of Precinct 1 graciously presented a resolution congratulating Commissioner Garcia and the Precinct 2 team for our National Association of Counties (NACo) awards. Last month, our team received four awards:

  • Health Services: COVID-19 response
  • Workforce Development: Employ2Empower with Harris County Sheriff's Office
  • Community Centers and Programming: Winter storm repair program
  • Parks: Solar-powered trails
