In February 2018, Preferred Materials Asphalt and Construction Brought Home 11 NAPA Quality in Construction Awards for 2017.
Preferred Materials Concrete Breaks Barriers to Complete Award-Winning Project.

In addition to meeting specific design criteria and mix performance for the owner of the Barrier One Warehouse project in Winter Garden, Florida, Preferred Materials Concrete Division faced flyash shortages in the Central Florida market. Working with Barrier One, Inc., Preferred developed a mix that accomplished many requirements including waterproofing, shrinkage reduction, inhibiting corrosion & alkali silica. Furthermore, Preferred replaced the flyash with a cement/slag mixture. This 5,000 yd project was completed in 2017 and the owner used the newly-developed mixes for foundations, sog, tilt panels, and paving. The project was submitted to the Slag Cement Association and won the Year Award Project. The awards were presented at the American Concrete Institute’s Spring 2018 Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 28, 2018.
H1 2018 BUSINESS UPDATES
It is hard to believe we find ourselves already well into 2018, and mid-year is upon us. There has been an abundance of vibrant activity in our businesses since the end of 2017.

On Dec 1, 2017, we welcomed over 700 new employees to the Preferred Materials Region family, with the acquisition of Prestige Concrete Products, including Prestige Gunite and Shotcrete, as well as A-Mining located in Lamont, Florida. Our teams worked diligently to ensure a smooth transition, and I applaud the efforts of all employees involved in making the integration a success. The future is bright for our Region, and we look forward to enhancing our customer service via the expanded Regional platform.

I would also like to mention the exceptional safety performance that Conrad Yelvington Distributors (CYD) had in 2017. The business finished in the top 10 of all CRH Americas Materials companies in regards to safety performance, with only two recordable injuries, and zero preventable vehicular incidents. It is critically important that we focus on the risks around us, taking time to conduct quality risk assessments, and communicating identified hazards. Congratulations to the CYD team on a great year!

It will be vital that we continue our work of improving business processes, streamlining efficiencies and reducing costs to enhance our customer service and continue to differentiate ourselves in the marketplace. We will continue our goal of enhancing our partnership with you! We want to ensure that your experience in dealing with us is second to none!

In closing, I would like to say Thank You for your continued patronage and allowing us to be your “Preferred” supplier. I wish you well with a strong finish to 2018.

Preferred Materials Welcomes A-Mining and Prestige Concrete

Prestige Concrete Products Brings
the Region a New Line of Business
The Flexibility of Gunite and Shotcrete Allows Pool's Owner to Have a Uniquely Shaped Design If Desired
The Preferred Materials Region welcomed 600+ employees to its family through the acquisition of two companies – A-Mining and Prestige Concrete Products in December 2017. A-Mining joins Conrad Yelvington Distributors (CYD) operations, adding a limestone quarry in Lamont, Florida. The Lamont Quarry produces a wide range of construction aggregates and agricultural lime for the north Florida markets.

Prestige Concrete Products joined Preferred Materials bringing a new line of business (shotcrete and gunite) and nearly doubling our ready-mix fleet. Gunite and Shotcrete is the process of pneumatically applying concrete onto different surfaces at a high velocity. Gunite and Shotcrete are ideal for pool construction, and are watertight, durable, attractive and economical. The material is shot against excavated soil, eliminating the cost of froms that would no rmally be needed. The flexibility of Gunite and Shotcrete allows every pool owner to have a uniquely shaped p ool if desired.

When it comes to restoration and repairs, Gunite and Shotcrete are often the best alternative for both reinforced and nonreinforced construction such as tanks and pools, retaining walls, dams and reservoirs, parking garages and highway structures.

Prestige’s Gunite & Shotcrete operations have delivered places and finished over 100,000 pool and fountain installations for contractors throughout the state of Florida.

SPECIAL INTEREST PROJECT
Restoring Universal's Volcano Bay Water Park
Krakatau - Main's Park Attraction
Being Restored with Gunite
Prestige Applied Gunite in All the Swimming Pool Walls, Lazy River, Action River and Collector Tank
Universal's Volcano Bay Water Theme Park or Volcano Bay had their grand opening on May 25, 2017. The theme park replaced Wet 'n Wild as Universal Orlando Resort's water park. Operated and owned by Universal Parks and Resort, Volcano Bay bulks 6,000 people according to the park report. The water park attracts families from all over the world year-round.

As one of the main water parks in Florida, the theme park has its heart around a 200-foot-tall (61 m) volcano named “Krakatau.” Krakatau Aqua Coaster is the main attraction of the park and structures a four-person canoes slide that goes up, down, in the dark within the volcano through the cascades. Krakatau has waterfalls during the day and fiery lava effects at night.

Universal has upgraded and torn out several existing structures on the property to better accommodate its guest. Preferred Material Concrete is proud of being part of this major project and offer renovation for several of its attractions. The upgrading of the Volcano Bay called for Prestige Gunite to give gunite in all the swimming pool walls, lazy river, and action river and collector tank.

Challenges arose in the 15 month’s project which took about 4K yards of work. The Preferred Materials Concrete team broke strengths of over 5K PSI consistently throughout the project. The closure of Volcano Bay’s project gave PMI high praise and recognition of being part of one more major enterprise .

David McCurdy Stepped Up,
So CYD Didn't Have to Shut Down
CYD's Orlando terminal needed extensive repairs such as the complete replacement of the pit hopper and trestle, as well as the refurbishment of holes in the drop chute of the conveyor.

These repairs required multiple days of work at one of the company’s busiest rail terminals. Rather than shutting down operations the entire week, David worked on a Sunday while the rail terminal was closed to safely make the repairs.

Moreover, his dedication to efficiency and quality work resulted in having the Orlando terminal shut down for just one work-day.

David's selfless work ethic proved to make a minimal interruption to what could have been a major disturbance to operations.
