Racial Inequities Persist in Birth Prematurity

A UCSF study found risk of premature birth 60% higher among women infected with Covid at any point during pregnancy. Add hypertension, diabetes, or obesity and the risk is 160%.

According to estimates of CDC data for 2020:

  • Births were down 4%- The 6th consecutive year of decline.
  • Preterm births declined from 10.23% to 10.9%, but only 1% for Latinx, and not at all for Black women.
  • Low risk cesarean births are up, from 25.6% to 25.9%
